There was a ton of talent on display and there were a lot of great games. Here is a look at the top standouts from the 12U division.
Peyton Miamba, Deon Johnson & Kaleb Elkins (Indiana Elite)
Capturing the 12U title, Indiana Elite had a bunch of talent on display. Peyton Miamba, a lengthy athlete put up a team-high 19 points in the championship against Grind Elite. He uses his size well and can shoot the mid-range and finish around the rim. Deon Johnson, another long body for Indiana Elite recorded 16 points in that game and certainly has a good scoring prowess. Earlier in the day on Sunday, Kaleb Elkins had a team-best 14 points in a win over GCG Milwaukee. He has a nice set of power moves.
…Two other names to keep an eye on with this squad: Brock Woods, a big body who fights for buckets and boards inside. Cash Daniels, an undersized but speedy and high IQ point guard who leads the charge.
Will Verkuilen (Grind Elite)
Pictured above, I really liked the way Will Verkuilen played. He posted a 15-point outing in an early Sunday win over GCG Milwaukee. Playing on a very in sync Grind Elite squad, he helped his team flourish all weekend long. In the championship tilt against Indiana Elite, he continued to play hard and shoot and slash. Verkuilen has a bright future.
Bryson Dorris, Isaiah Fox & Quincy McKinnie (GCG Milwaukee)
A very sound squad all around, GCG Milwaukee saw Bryson Dorris reach the 20-point mark often on the weekend slate. The big bodied forward dropped 20 and 21 points on Sunday as I watched him continue to fight for his and finish inside with purpose. Isaiah Fox paired well with him, producing jumpers and transition finishes with 13 points against D1 Minnesota – Miller. In the early game on Sunday, Quincy McKinnie had a nice showing with 11 points in a loss to Indiana Elite. He is a true athlete with blazing speed and hops.
Donovan Bradford, Biggie Houts & Tavion Wilson (D1 Minnesota – Miller)
D1 Minnesota – Miller got effort from all facets of its team. Donovan Bradford impressed me most in a Sunday loss to GCG Milwaukee, producing a 19-point outing. He has a good feel for the interior game and can hurt you with his speed out on the break. Biggie Houts tacked on 16 points and paired well with Bradford’s slashing skills. Tavion Wilson shot it well earlier in the day in a win over Team Teague Johnson with a 13-point game.
Brandon Sharpe & Lakin Shurig (Team Teague Johnson)
For Team Teague Johnson, Lakin Shurig showed off his shooting touch and it worked his favor in a loss to D1 Minnesota – Miller. Scoring 13 points, he hit some key shots down the stretch and really kept the confidence on his team’s side despite the outcome. Shurig is a gamer. Brandon Sharpe was the most reliable prospect on the weekend for Team Teague Johnson with his mix of size and shooting ability.
Sanjuan Forte (Grand Park)
A lengthier body, Sanjuan Forte has a nice feel for the game. He always pushes in transition and handles feeds up court well from teammates. For Grand Park, Forte was the most polished player on the floor. He added 10 points in the Sunday loss to Grind Elite but never stopped bringing energy.
