I was able to attend the event on July 10 and here’s a quick look at some additional top CA talent that was in the building.
1. Patrick Johnson – Compton/Olympus Prep 2021
Johnson finished up his senior year at Compton and will be attending Olympus Prep in NJ next fall. He can play both point guard and shooting guard. He’s a slasher with a quick off the dribble game and he can finish strong at the rim. He runs he break very well and knows when to hit his teammates with the pass. He can handle defensive pressure well. Good off-ball movement. He’s a strong perimeter defender. He stays low and slides his feet well. Keeps his arms out.
2. Pierre Geneste – Ribet Academy 2023
This was my first time seeing Geneste in person and he has a lot of upside as a big man. He boxes out properly and he crashes the offensive glass well. He can move well without the ball; he rolls to the rim well after setting the pick and he makes good cuts around the rim. Effective in the dunker spot. Defensively, he can be an anchor in the paint, altering shots. He’s mobile too and can cover ground defensively. He has good hands and he finishes strong at the rim.
3. Justin Daniels Justin Daniels 6'4" | SG Mater Dei | 2023 CA-S – Taft 2023
Daniels is a solid wing prospect who’s stock has been steadily rising. He’s a bit of a combo player. He fits in well as a wing/shooting guard, but he’s an effective ball-handler who can play a little point. He has a good slashing game and he can suck in the defense and kick out to open shooters. Really good court vision. He’s a good midrange shooter; he can shoot off the dribble or hit pull-ups in transition. He can also shoot off of screens effectively.
4. Gio Phillips – NELA Prep 2021
Phillips is a guard that I’ve seen a few times now. He’s one of the better guards I’ve seen in transition. He runs the break well, has good handles, keeps his head up, can handle defensive pressure and he looks for his open teammates. He’s got a solid slashing game; he can get into the paint and finish. A strong guard who can draw contact and get himself to the free-throw line. Can shoot the midrange with consistency.
