July News & Notes: South Florida

<p>We are flying through the grassroots season and many new headlines continue to emerge. Let’s take a look at some of the latest information throughout South Florida.</p> <p>2022 [player_tooltip player_id="712115" first="Justin" last="Abson"] earned an offer from <strong>High Point University</strong> on July 15th. The 6-foot-9 forward has dominated defensively for the <strong>Nightrydas Elite</strong>. Abson has hovered around second in blocks per game on the <strong>Nike EYBL</strong> leaderboard with over three per contest. Against <strong>Expressions Elite</strong>, he recorded seven rejections and scored 10 points on 4-of-4 from the field. Abson holds additional offers from <strong>Georgia State</strong>, <strong>Lehigh</strong>, <strong>Rider</strong>, <strong>Moorhead</strong> <strong>State</strong>, <strong>Florida Gulf Coast</strong>, <strong>Rider</strong>, <strong>Appalachian State</strong>, <strong>Troy</strong>, <strong>Wofford</strong> and <strong>Stetson</strong>.</p> <p>2023 <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="709227" first="Jaylen" last="Carey"]</strong> earned an offer from <strong>Ole Miss</strong> on July 14th. The 6-foot-10 power forward scored 29 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the <strong>Nightrydas Elite</strong> against <strong>Howard Pulley</strong>. Carey has built solid momentum after a successful stint at the <strong>GBCA</strong> team camp in late June. In one outing against <strong>Norcoss Georgia, </strong>Carey scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds<strong>. </strong>His ownership of the glass and inside-out scoring ability is why I believe he is well on his way to being the best player in the area. I expect big-time offers for Carey as we move into the fall.</p> <p>2022 <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="546221" first="Aidan" last="Abell"]</strong> helped <strong>Florida Pro Basketball </strong>to a perfect 5-0 record and victory over <strong>EG10 </strong>in the 17U <strong>Grassroots Showdown</strong> championship game. The <strong>Westminster Academy</strong> shooting guard scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds in the one-point victory. Abell averaged 16 points over the five-game set. Previously against <strong>3D Empire</strong>, Abell scored 25 points (per @<strong><em>FloridaProHoops</em></strong>) and knocked down five 3-pointers. He also provided a massive game with 27 points and six 3-pointers against <strong>The Skill</strong> <strong>Factory</strong> back on July 8th. Moreover, Abell hit the game-winning three in that contest. He is becoming a better player with each passing day. The 6-foot-5 Abell holds an offer from <strong>Stetson University</strong>. Numerous other D-1 programs have shown him interest and I expect his offer list to grow in due time.</p> <p>Abell’s teammate, 2022 <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="829389" first="Elijah" last="Wyche"]</strong>, provided the game-winning basket in the final with a tip-in off a missed free throw. The 6-foot-6 forward averaged 12.6 points and 6.7 rebounds during the showdown. Wyche helped <strong>Pembroke Pines Charter</strong> to a Class 5A state championship this past season. He scored 13 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out six assists in the final against <strong>Choctawatchee</strong>.</p> <p>In addition, 2022 <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="955771" first="Andrew" last="Akuchie"] </strong>(<strong>St. Thomas Aquinas</strong>) averaged 9.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-8 forward holds offers from <strong>Lafayette</strong>, <strong>Rice</strong> and <strong>Albany</strong>. His high GPA (4.0) off the court is a great sticking point for college programs.</p> <p>Florida Pro also got a big game from 2022 <strong>Pedro Brown</strong> (Previous: <strong>Grandview Prep</strong>) vs. EG10 with 17 points and nine rebounds. The 6-foot-11 center is doing a post-grad at <strong>National Top Sports Institute </strong>in <strong>Orlando</strong>. Brown averaged 15 points and ten rebounds for the Pride last season.
