The Capitol Hoops Summer League at DeMatha consists of 28 high school teams from the DMV that each play 10 games over a 5-week period, culminating in a 16-team playoff. Tonight’s quarterfinals matchups were dominated by lights-out shooting from the perimeter, with several high-academic guards leading their teams to dominant victories to advance to the semifinals.

The top performance definitely belonged to ’23 6’3 guard [player_tooltip player_id="957024" first="Zane" last="Adnan"] (New World/Bullis) with a final stat line of 37 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks, and 1 steal off of 81% FG /89% 3 PT/100% FT shooting splits. The high academic (4.1) guard’s jump shot is complimented by a phenomenal feel for the game, patient and efficient play-making, and an ability to avoid traps and escape ball pressure with a tight handle. Zane told me that he’s hearing from Lehigh, Penn, Yale, JMU, and Air Force.

’23 6’4 SG [player_tooltip player_id="957029" first="Ben" last="Woodward"] (DeMatha) turned an 11-point personal run at the beginning of the game into a great all-around performance with 23 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal while shooting 46% from 3 to lift a short-handed DeMatha team into the semifinals. 6’2 ’22 Teammate [player_tooltip player_id="904647" first="Tre" last="Powell"] (6th Man Warriors) also had a big impact on the game for DeMatha with 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists.

’22 6’3 CG [player_tooltip player_id="1159449" first="Eddie" last="Paquette"] (Prospect U) was a menace for Gonzaga in their game against Rock Creek, turning in a 17-point, 10-rebound, 6-assist, 3-steal performance in just 23 minutes of playing time. The high-academic recruit (4.4 GPA) showed a knack for tracking down loose balls, making the extra pass, taking the right shots, and leading a short-handed Gonzaga squad into the semifinals. ’22 6’2 Gonzaga G Cole Cosby continued his stellar play in summer league in an increased role with 16 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 block and 1 steal. ’24 6’3 Oxon Hill G Hasson Dorman showed flashes of high-level talent throughout the contest with elite speed and burst, play-making ability, and scoring prowess with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and a steal.

’22 6’ Gwynn Park CG [player_tooltip player_id="904662" first="Ryan" last="Archey"] showed why he took home MVP honors for the CHSL, finishing with 21 points, 4 assists and 1 rebound shooting over 50% from the field. The shifty guard impressed in the half court, consistently hitting shots in the face of extra defensive attention and pressure from his opponent.
