Many of the players on this list showed versatility in either scoring, or another element of the game. Others capitalized on defensive plays which caught my eye. Or guys just competed hard and showed they wanted to be on the floor. Regardless of which criteria, below is the top performers from Ohio.
Gavin Headings Gavin Headings 6'8" | PF Pickerington Central | 2023 State OH – Nova Village-Stavroff (Pickerington Central) 6-7
Headings arguably was the best SF prospect I saw last weekend. I liked at first glance his combination of size and length. Has the proper footwork and discipline to defend on the perimeter. Headings has some very long arms which combined with the length allowed him to easily grab offensive rebounds throughout the weekend. Will need to be more consistent in finishing in the paint, but overall shows a lot of upside and a scholarship prospect most definitely.
Abubakarr Bagura- Nova Village-Stavroff (Westerville Central) 6-2
Bagura was one of the smaller SFs I saw. Lacked in height, but played much bigger than he was listed. Very strong upper body. Tough, gritty player that fights through screens and makes plays in the trenches. Likely will play 2G in college and will need to show me an ability to shoot the ball. Plays with the toughness and physicality though to be ready for college ball.
Sean Craig Sean Craig 6'6" | PF Sylvania Northview | 2022 State OH – Bates Fundamentals Red (Northview) 6-7
One of the few Ohio players on this Bates team, Craig impressed as one of the better players on the floor. Very good rebounder, especially on the offensive end. Persistent and secures boards easily and at a high level. Grabs boards with two hands. Willing to take contact when on offense. Found himself at the free throw line several times throughout their game against Hard Work. Already has an outside touch and recently started to see his recruitment pick up.
Kannon Klusmeyer- Hopson Elite-Awls (Perrysburg) 6-5
Klusmeyer impressed me with his basketball IQ and intelligence on the floor. Understands concept of spacing out and showed willingness to relocate to allow other guys better opportunities to score. Made the smart pass and was efficient in doing so. Not the most physically imposing SF but showed he can battle on the boards. Promising prospect at the D3 level.
Rodney Williams- Hard Work Basketball (Cleveland Heights) 6-2
Definitely looks more like a guard but listed as a SF in the media guide. Very bouncy prospect. Great elevation and dunking abilities. Likes to get up and down the floor in transition. Quick feet when defending the ball. Has bursts of explosiveness and athleticism off the drive and initiates contact in the paint. If he can show an ability to be a shooting threat either in midrange or perimeter, could be an intriguing prospect to watch.
Christopher Mitchell- Nova Village-Hinkle (Bexley) 6-5
Mitchell can do a little bit of everything for a team. Was a great combination player with his bigger frame and handled the ball exceptionally well for a 6-5 SF. More than anything, I was impressed with how he defended a 6-10 PF in Nova Village’s game against Team FOCUS Select. Mitchell pushed the big man around and made things difficult for him to get post ups. Tough player no doubt with high ceiling.
Chase Ouellette Chase Ouellette 6'6" | PF The Wellington School | 2022 State OH – Ohio Buckets-Meis (Wellington School) 6-6
Arguably my favorite prospect at the SF position. Ouellette hustles and makes plays all over the floor. Moves well defensively and covers a lot of ground with his speed and size. Offensively his shooting mechanics were a little odd, but he was making shots which is all that matters. Little smaller in terms of muscle mass but his heart and drive makes up for this. Another high ceiling prospect.
Zack Oddo Zack Oddo 6'5" | SF Green | 2022 State OH – Team Clutch Ohio (Uniontown Green) 6-5
Lengthy shooting option out of the SF position. Stretches the floor with his ability to make shots anywhere beyond the arc. Very nice shooting mechanics and a confident shooter. Can play in a role where he isn’t the primary scoring threat. Hard working prospect that had multiple media members intrigued by his play.
