Shooting Guards & Small Forwards in the Class of 2022

In this article:
The class of 2022 in Louisiana has some of the most versatile ballplayers playing the shooting guard and small forward position in the prep basektball. These wings get it done on the offensive and defensive end night in and night out. With the live period approaching, here are the notable small forwards and shooting guards from this widely talented class.
Dorian Finister

LA
(6’5" / SG / Carver / OVR #3)
Mulitfacted wing player is what Dorian is. Finister has improved his shooting and ballhandling to become a prep star. He now has an extra gear in his first step and he tries to take the defenders heads off going to the rim. Did I mention he is a better perimeter defender as well? Dorian is the top wing in the Boot and will get a chance to show that during the July live period.
Jacob Wilson

Liberty | 2022
State
LA
(6’5" / SF / Liberty / OVR #9)
Wilson is Mr. Versatility for the Liberty High. He can score from the wing or the post and is a mismatch most nights. Wilson also plays the head on the Liberty press and creates turnovers with his length and defensive acumen. Only a select few do as much as Wilson does on the floor.
Jalen Bolden Jalen Bolden 6'5" | SG Zachary | 2022 State LA (6’4" / SG / Zachary / OVR #10)
While he has the freedom to initiate the offense, Bolden seems to be more dangerous when he does not possess the ball. Jalen attacks the rim and shoots the corner three at a high level. He is also a rebound and go type player. Bolden puts a ton of pressure on defenses offensively. He is very good in that aspect.
Jalen Knox Jalen Knox 6'4" | SF Port Allen | 2022 State LA (6’4" / SF / Port Allen / OVR #15)
The two time state champion is a player who has sacrificed his game for the betterment of the team. As many saw during the second title, Knox has the ability to handle on the perimeter and attack the rim. He is Port Allen’s best post player and his ability to score inside and out makes him a threat from everywhere.
JT Curry JT Curry 6'7" | SF Southern Lab | 2022 State LA (6’7" / SF / Southern Lab / OVR #19)
Curry is the high school version of a point forward. He is able to lead the break in the open floor or can be the finisher in that setting. Getting him the ball in space usually means trouble for the offense.
Christian Ferguson (6’5" / SG / BTW (New Orleans) / OVR #23)
Arguably the best shooting wing in the state has grown a couple of inches seemingly since the season ended. He has improved his release time and range which makes him more dangerous as a shooter. Ferguson is becoming everything a team would want in a spot-up shooter.
Donald Butler

Walker | 2022

LA
(6’5" / SF / Walker / OVR #24)
The grassroots season has seen him improve on his ballhandling in the open floor. Butler now attacks the rim with purpose and has very bad intentions when he gets to the rim. His continued improvement on aspects of his game will make him a difference maker for Walker.
Collin Coates

Coates can hurt teams from deep and in the mid-range. He can also put it on the deck well enough to get to his designated spots. He is not going to blow by anyone but his stroke and length can keep defenders honest.
Donavan Seamster

Woodlawn-Shreve | 2022

LA
(6’2" / SG / Woodlawn-Shreveport / OVR #28)
The Woodlawn guard’s shooting range begins when he walks in the gym. Seamster has been known for his long range shooting since middle school. However, his ability to attack the rim has opened up scoring options for himself and others. He has definitely improved on his movement without the ball.
Markell McClain

6'3" | SG
Peabody | 2022
State
LA
(6’3" / SG / Peabody / OVR #34)
The Peabody wing is a newcomer to the rankings list and should be a mainstay this season. He is dangerous in the mid-range and loves to shoot his jumper driving left. McClain has the knowhow to spot up as well and rebounds well for a guard. He does a little of everything on the floor.
Stanley Morrison Stanley Morrison 6'3" | SG McKinley | 2022 State LA (6’3" / SG / McKinley / OVR #35)
A shooting guard who can do more than shoot. He is good at attacking the rim and can defend well on the perimeter. Morrison plays a big part in the offensive success of McKinley.
Treylin Whaley

(6’4" / SF / Livonia / OVR #37)
Want to talk about a wing who has drastically improved his game. Once thought of as a football only guy, Whaley has used the grassroots season to show he can do more. He has been deadly spotting up from three and has beat up guys in the paint. His play has been one of the bright spots on the Prep Hoops Circuit.

When I think of wings who have a had a breakout grassroots season,
Troy Cole

is on that short list. Using his strength to take player off the dribble has made him undefenseable at times during games. His man-to-man defense has been game changing; however. Cole is very good at turning defense into offense.
Noah Jonker

Jonker
6'5" | PF
Alexandria | 2022
State
LA
(6’5" / SF / Alexandria / OVR #43)
Jonker is the best pick and pop player we have on the Louisiana prep scene. The ASH high screen action with Jonker as the screener is a deadly part of their offense. The 2020 state champion is very good on the boards as well and has shown an improved ability to get to the rim in grassroots play. A very underrated forward is Jonker.
Calvin Collins Calvin Collins 6'4" | SF BTW (Shreveport) | 2022 State LA (6’4" / SF / BTW-Shreveport / OVR #45)
The anchor of the Lion defense, Collins is pretty good at protecting the paint with blocks and defensive rebounding. Offensively, he has one of the more consistent baseline jumpers I have seen. Collins is also super dangerous in transition because alot of players can not keep up with him. One of the toughest players in prep basketball.
