We start with the incoming high schoolers, the Class of 2025. This class brought them as they were the group I watched the most this weekend. One thing I really looked for in this group was not necessarily how many points they scored in every game, but their physicality and confidence level. Did they grab a tough rebound? Did they use all the power in their body to get that and-one? Did they make their teammates better and score high in our team points rating? All of those factors and more are the reasons these 22 young men made our Class of 2025 All-Tournament Team from Prep Hoops Next’s Northstar Hoops Report State Tournament.
One last thing I wanted to note about this list, these players listed are on an “as seen” basis or were nominated by their head coach. The evaluations you see below are mostly on an “as seen” basis or along with notes passed along by the head coach and are in no particular order. I hope you enjoy our #NEXTNHRSTATE 2025 All-Tournament Team!
FIRST TEAM
Sam Hondl | Albany, MN | Minnesota Comets Hanson 2025
It did not take Hondl anytime whatsoever to put the pedal to the floor against Minnesota Rise, which sold me 100%, putting him as a first-team. I was really impressed with how Hondl ran the floor as a big and just how versatile he was with his shot selection. His outside shooting ability was fun to watch, and I really liked his vision and showed great ball instincts on reading where the ball was going so he could get his active hands in there. Going to be a fun player in the strong Albany Huskies program who has been solid for the last 4-5 years.
Jeremiah Johnson | St. Michael-Albertville, MN | Minnesota Matrix 2025
In the few games I watched or had a glimpse of Jeremiah’s game, he was just a fundamentally sound guard that did the little things right, which is why I put him on our first team from this weekend. Johnson was a terrific passer and had a team-first mentality in his game. Some look at the stat sheet to make their teams, but Jeremiah has a skill-set that models well if you weren’t looking at the box score as he’s a guard that does the little things right. Johnson is a nearby prospect I hope to watch blossom at the high school level for the Knights.
Owen Mattson | Lakeville, MN | Minnesota Select Babb 2025
Mattson was a multi-level scorer despite being one of the bigger kids on Minnesota Select Babb 2025. He showed off the terrific length in his 6’3 frame and really rocked the boat against Minnesota Comets Swartout 2025 with his physicality level. A development Mattson could work on is developing a better body position to grab rebounds as he had a low number from what I witnessed on Saturday afternoon.
Korde Roseman | Baxter, MN | Midwest Kings 2025
This was my second time watching Korde on the Prep Hoops Next Circuit, and this time he looked like a more complete player than I had watched at Battle at the Lakes. He turned the corner in Omaha with my colleague Spencer Pulliam looking on, and now I feel his game is full speed ahead. I really loved the great physicality he showed on Saturday when he attacked the bucket. Korde also has a solid body frame that can maneuver around the paint when he wants to. Going to be a fun player to watch as he develops at the high school level. Brainerd graduates 2 of their top 3 scorers from last season and had one freshman on the team last year, which could be Roseman’s spot for the Warriors.
Riley Grossman | Lakeville, MN | Top Flight Bensen 2025
Mason King | Caledonia, MN | Minnesota Lightning King 2025
Mikai Taylor | Eden Prairie, MN | Minnesota Heat Deon 2025
Malachi Boadi-Aboagye | Minnetonka, MN | Minnesota Heat Deon 2025
SECOND TEAM
Ronnie Brown | Minneapolis, MN | Real Phenom Joe 2025
Although Real Phenom Joe 2025 came out on the losing end of their lone game I watched this weekend; I could not stop watching their 5’3 guard Ronnie Brown. When I watched Brown, I could tell that he was a team-first player as he not only was a multi-level scorer, he was a menace with his hands in the passing lanes. When Ronnie would go to the bucket, he not only looked confident getting there, but he showed a solid court balance even when he turned on the jets to go hard to the bucket.
Max Howard | Waseca, MN | Minnesota Select Babb 2025
Howard was a solid shot creator on all three levels this weekend. He started from the outside and worked his way to the paint, which was excellent to see him be such a versatile asset in dominating fashion for Minnesota Select Babb. One of two future Waseca Blue Jays on this roster that made our tournament teams as the Blue Jays continue their growth with a solid youth program coming up.
Matthew Mobagi | Mound-Westonka, MN | Minnesota Swish Aalfs 2025
Mobagi really stuck out to me in his ability to get to the bucket against Minnesota Suns 2025. He showed off a fearless motor while getting there and gets into the paint with confidence. Mobagi, as a 6’0 forward, is a really stretchy prospect that will definitely be fun to watch at the high school level. I came away impressed with his awareness with and without the basketball as he showed solid basketball IQ on all fronts. Mobagi was another kid from the state tournament; the football scout in me was like, “Man, this kid could be fun at wide receiver for the White Hawks,” in watch Mobgai joked that the Mound-Westonka White Hawks already were on top of it.
Tahir Peterson | Minneapolis, MN | Rip City 2025
I got a few glimpses of Peterson this weekend in Eden Prairie, and in both outings, he showed a great feel for the game scoring in double digits both times. Peterson also was stuck like glue on the defensive end against the Roadrunners 2025 (MN) program, where he may not score high in the team points category, but his defensive play certainly stuck out regardless of the score sheet. Peterson was also confident at getting to the bucket and getting contact to get to the free-throw line.
Jake Schultz | Delano, MN | Minnesota Matrix 2025
Schultz was certainly a sniper from long range from what I watched from Saturday. He was mobile on the top hash and could create his own shot with ease against D1 Minnesota. Schultz was another prospect on this second team inching at the first team. I think if Schultz can develop some more size to collect boards and create more turnovers with his reach, he will become a more complete player as he enters high school with the Delano Tigers, who are a strong program in Class 4A.
Keller Hanson | Sauk Rapids, MN | Minnesota Comets Hanson 2025
Zach Driscoll | Monona, IA | Minnesota Lightning King 2025
Cole Stern | Eden Prairie, MN | Minnesota Heat Deon 2025
THIRD TEAM
Tauston Rupe | Waseca, MN | Minnesota Select Babb 2025
Talk about a yoked 8th grader; that might have been why Tauston Rupe was able to grab such a high amount of steals because the offense got too scared when he came near them. Rupe wasn’t the biggest player on the court at 5’9, but he was a super-effective defender. To my count, Rupe logged one of the biggest numbers when it comes to steals I had all weekend. His defensive effort is super physical, and his frame would be intimidating to go up against if I am an 8th grader on the Prep Hoops Next Circuit. Rupe, like so many others, I can tell he will be a solid multi-sport athlete at Waseca and one I can’t wait to keep my eyes on as we enter fall football season.
Jordon VanWinkle | Rosemount, MN | Minnesota Select Babb 2025
VanWinke was another team-first prospect for Minnesota Select Babb 2025. VanWinkle scored a high rating in our team points division and showed versatility in that department this weekend in Eden Prairie.
Omar Whittaker Jr. | Richfield, MN | Rip City 2025
Per my notes, Omar was a prospect that played with a lot of grit when I watched him on Sunday. He was a longer guard that was a solid passer and played with a strong demeanor. What I liked most about Omar is his ability just to go get after what he wanted, whether that was crash the boards, attacking the ball to get a steal, etc. He should be a fun freshman to watch at Cristo Rey Jesuit next year, which I wouldn’t be surprised to see him on varsity as a freshman as the Pumas had four freshmen on their roster last season.
Ethan Meyer | Albany, MN | Minnesota Comets Hanson 2025
Meyer loaded up in our team points rating for his showing against Minnesota Rise on Saturday morning. Meyer had a few nice buckets, but the versatility of how he was making his team better was outstanding. Meyer comes from a great basketball pedigree with a sister headed to South Dakota State to play basketball this season. I have watched both now, and they both have one skill set in common I have noticed, team-first basketball.
Jackson Remus | Eden Prairie, MN | Minnesota Heat Deon 2025
Kaiden Wilbur | Holmen, WI | Minnesota Lightning King 2025
