After updating our 2023 rankings recently, we’re going to be looking at some players who improved their stock and which players found their names in the rankings for the first time.

[player_tooltip player_id="867938" first="Lance" last="Hayes"], 6’4 CG STVM 2023 All Ohio Red 16U: Hayes has been one of the more intriguing guards in this class for a while and we’re starting to see him put together his physical tools into production more and more often. Hayes comes off the bench for All Ohio Red, but is one of their better defenders and athletes on the roster. Hayes also is expected to jump into a starting role for STVM after the Irish lose [player_tooltip player_id="919005" first="Austin" last="Rayman"] and Darrian Lewis to graduation. He’s one of the top candidates for a breakout winter in the entire state.

[player_tooltip player_id="976076" first="Terrance" last="Pankey Jr"], 6’2 SG Ursuline 2023 Ohio Basketball Club 16U: Pankey is the highest rated player who didn’t appear in our last set of rankings. Pankey is very athletic and has a great first step to get around defenders. Pankey is super aggressive and plays with an edge to him when he steps on the court. I love how Pankey seems to take match-ups with highly rated prospects personally, as he went blow for blow against Indiana Elite. I expect big things out of Pankey as a Junior and he’s clearly the top prospect in the Youngstown area that we’ve seen.

[player_tooltip player_id="976075" first="Bede" last="Lori"], 6’2 CG Caldwell 2023 C2K Elite 16U: Lori is one of the top shooters in the entire state and has already surpassed 1,000 career points on the varsity level. Lori is one of the best free-throw shooters in the state as well, knocking down over 60 in a row during his Sophomore season, almost breaking the state record for consecutive makes. It’s nice to see Lori play for C2K on the grassroots scene because these opponents are much better competition to gauge just how good of a college prospect he is. Lori has his ups and downs against elite level athleticism, but he is still incredibly dangerous as a shooter and is probably an underrated passer as well.

[player_tooltip player_id="1163453" first="MJ" last="Boyce"], 6’2 SG Buchtel 2023 C2K Elite 16U: Boyce caught my eye in Buchtel’s regional semifinal contest against Toledo Central Catholic and continued his impressive play with C2K in Fort Wayne. Boyce is a slashing guard that plays well off other talented teammates. He’s proven he can contribute next to [player_tooltip player_id="1041394" first="Chris" last="Livingston"] in high school ball, and alongside a variety of talented players for C2K Elite. I would like to see Boyce get more on ball reps to see just how well he can create for others, as right now he’s sorta a play finisher for both teams he plays for.

[player_tooltip player_id="1203995" first="Brady" last="Hardewig"], 6’1 SG Turpin 2023 Griffin Elite-Hardewig: Hardewig’s AAU team (coached by his father) has been dominant on the Prep Hoops Circuit and in other events this Spring. Brady is the top Ohio prospect from this team as most of their other key contributors are from Kentucky. Hardewig is an excellent spot-up shooter and has flashes as a distributor for others as well. I’ll be interested to see how Hardewig looks with Turpin this June and winter with a more on ball role.
