The objective of this piece is to highlight some of the talented prospects who will be competing down in Hampton at Hoop Group’s much-anticipated event: Southern Jam Fest. Here is a rundown of five unheralded prospects to watch this weekend.
Devin Ceaser | New World/SSSAS (VA) ’22
If you live in the DMV and follow grassroots hoops, there’s a good chance you know who Devin Ceaser is. But to be frank, his profile should be much bigger than it is, particularly on a national level. Ceaser is one of the quickest, most explosive, and most resilient guards you’ll find in this region. He can score from anywhere on the court and has the potential to be an elite defender. Expect Ceaser to stand out as a result of his relentless, aggressive, and aesthetically pleasing style of play.
Anthony Davis Jr. | Virginia Elite UA Rise/Bishop McLaughlin (FL) ’22
Anthony Davis Jr. previously attended school in Virginia prior to Florida, so he’s well known to those who have been following the hoops scene closely in recent years. Davis is a big guard, sturdily built at around 6-foot-5, who is very versatile. Expect him to be a difference-maker on both ends for Virginia Elite.
Charlie Jackson Charlie Jackson 6'5" | PF Episcopal | 2022 State VA | Team Takeover Orange/Episcopal (VA) ’22
Charlie Jackson Charlie Jackson 6'5" | PF Episcopal | 2022 State VA is coming off a productive weekend up at Spooky Nook during Zero Gravity’s “The Summit”. The 6-foot-5 forward initially burst onto the scene because of his shooting, but it’s been his rebounding that has stood out of late. Jackson goes and gets the ball at the highest point, and is good for about 10 boards per contest as a result. He is just as aggressive on the offensive glass as he is diligent on the defensive glass. If Jackson gets hot and hits multiple threes to go along with a handful of rebounds, he will probably gain the recognition he deserves.
Acaden Lewis | Team Melo/St. John’s (DC) ’24
Acaden Lewis is one of many talented underclassmen currently progressing through the ranks at St. John’s. The southpaw point guard enjoyed a fruitful weekend up at The Summit and is poised to build off the momentum he has created. Lewis has a diverse skill base that will only continue to grow moving forward. He handles the ball well, shoots it from the perimeter, and mixes it up nicely from inside the arc.
Savon Sutton | Team Melo/Legacy Early College (SC) ’23
The Savon Sutton bandwagon is adding passengers with each weekend that goes by and is beginning to reach capacity. The tall and dependable lead guard makes the game look easy and has evidently enjoyed himself while winning games this spring. If Melo hopes to make a deep run this weekend, Sutton will need to bring his A-game, and that includes elevating the level of his teammates.
