SANTA ANA, Ca—In one of the more anticipated match-ups in this shortened CIFSS season, Mater Dei, who at one time trailed by 10-points, clawed their way back with an impeccable defensive effort to pull out a 57-54 victory. The Monarchs received a feathery shooting performance from USC-bound [player_tooltip player_id="680209" first="Harrison" last="Hornery"] as he dropped in 24-points. Meanwhile the Braves of St. John Bosco after a strong 1st half performance struggled to find any offensive rhythm in the 2nd half.

Joel’s Take: The star of the night in this budding rivalry was Hornery. The USC-bound 4-man is an assassin with his scoring prowess, especially from 3-land. If defenders give him space he has the size and touch to torch the nets—and that is exactly what happended in this one as he dropped in six 3-pointers. His shooting touch was not the only aspect of his game that was working as he had a nice up-and-under finish that would best be labled as “nifty”.

2021, SG, 6-foot-4, 170 pounds

Joel’s Take: Word on the street is that Washington may not reclassify and instead move ahead in his recruitment and commit to play in college this fall. The wiry scoring guard is a fundamentally sound prospect who knows how to get into the teeth of the defense. If his path is thwarted, he can hit the pull-up or just nail the 3-point shot. He has a good 1st step, but he does need to gain strength to play through physicality going forward.

Slasher

[player_tooltip player_id="747085" first="Lamaj" last="Lewis"] (St. John Bosco)

2021, CG, 6-foot-5, 185 pounds

Joel’s Take: Lewis is one of the more intriguing prospects in the senior class. The LMU-bound guard is slashing scorer can finish with either hand and has a knack of finishing in the paint around length. His body control is uncanny and his burst is deceptive. The improvement on the consistency of his jump shot will be the catalyst going forward.

Nevada-bound

[player_tooltip player_id="747083" first="Nick" last="Davidson"] (Mater Dei)

2021, PF, 6-foot-9, 225 pounds

Joel’s Take: The Monarchs of Mater Dei are blessed with three skilled 4-men in Davidson, [player_tooltip player_id="680195" first="Wilhelm" last="Breidenbach"], and the aforementioned Hornery. Davidson showed off his smooth 3-point shot as well as his skill and savvy in the paint area. He has a nice frame with good length and broad shoulders as well. His ability to face-up his defender and utilize his triple threat game will bode him well at Nevada next season.
