There was a ton of talent on the floor at the Prep Hoops event in Wichita last weekend. But the 17U field was dominated by a collection of talent from Kansas City-area schools. The KC Spurs Black team ran roughshod over the competition. It will be interesting to see if the team stays together for summer exhibitions, and if so, when it will finally be challenged.

Here is a look at the group who suited up for the KC Spurs Black at the Midwest Grind Session (in alphabetical order):

[player_tooltip player_id="991576" first="I’Ryan" last="Allen"], 2022, 6-foot-2 guard, Raymore-Peculiar HS:

Allen is a left-handed guard who can really see the floor, get in the lane and shoot the ball. Coaches heralded the junior as the best all-around guard on the team. As a junior, Allen averaged 16 points 4.4 assists 1.5 steals for his Missouri high school.

[player_tooltip player_id="891913" first="Jaron" last="Briggs"], 2022, 6-foot-3 guard/forward, Piper HS:

His coaches described him as a ‘do everything athlete.’ Perhaps the most versatile member of the club, Briggs is a big, physical player who can dominate in the lane, but can also move to the perimeter. His stats at Piper back that up. As a junior, he averaged 16.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 2.5 steals. Briggs could be one of the top seniors in Kansas City and in Kansas 6A this year.

[player_tooltip player_id="824177" first="Elijah" last="Corner"], 2021, 6-foot-4 forward, Ruskin HS (pictured)

Corner was busy showing off his power at Wichita, but his coaches said he’s also one of the best shooters on the club. They described him as a ‘zone breaker’ with a strong midrange game. Corner earned 5A all state in Missouri. Corner remains uncommitted for college and is using the Spurs to showcase his talents.

[player_tooltip player_id="993518" first="Michael" last="Harrison"], 2022, 6-foot-4 guard/forward, Blue Springs HS:

Harrison is a big man who can put the ball on the floor and push it up court with ease. He plays the game at high speed and runs the floor well, making him a real danger in the transition and following breakaways. But he’s also a big contributor on the glass and in the lane. He averaged 9.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists.

[player_tooltip player_id="889456" first="Antwaun" last="Massey"], 2021, 6-foot-8 forward, Minnesota Prep:

Massey was the highlight maker for the Spurs. He runs the court with such speed and gets himself in the right spot for passes at the rim that result in thundering ally-oops. He gets up so high and with such body control, he makes every pass look like an accurate one. Massey is well-built and mature, so he dominated the younger competition at the defensive end.

[player_tooltip player_id="984956" first="Jaylan" last="Peeler"], 2022, 5-foot-11 guard, Center HS:

Peeler was the best facilitator on the club. He directs the offense both in the half-court set and at high speed in transition. He has great vision and court awareness. His coaches described him as a leader and a great on-ball defender who makes the extra pass and gets teammates involved.

[player_tooltip player_id="984943" first="Kortez" last="Stevenson"], 2022, 6-foot-6 forward, Center HS:

Stevenson didn’t make the highlight plays that Massey made, but he probably was the team’s best interior player. His coaches said he has the best back-to-the-basket game of the club’s big men.

[player_tooltip player_id="889464" first="Will" last="Townsend"], 2021, 6-foot-5 center, Shawnee Mission East HS:

The fundamentally sound and physical post player will be taking his game to Pensacola State next year. He never makes mistakes and gets the job done, as evidenced by his 68 percent on field goals as a senior. He averaged 14 points, 7.24 rebounds, and 1.24 blocks en route to third team 6A honors last season.

[player_tooltip player_id="992318" first="Dallas" last="Whitney"], 2022, 6-foot-7 guard/forward, Blue Springs South:

Whitney is a really long perimeter player who plays hard on defense. Like Peeler, Whitney is a really well-rounded player who defends and rebounds at the rim and is a terror running the floor. Look for Whitney to really make a name for himself as a senior. His junior year demonstrated his versatility. He averaged 10.5 points, 3 rebounds 1.9 assists and 2.1 steals.
