Prep Hoops made the trip to the Arizona Desert this past weekend to see one of NorCal’s top grassroots programs. Team Arsenal from Oakland CA. A few weeks ago they had a good showing in Dallas at the Circuit going 3-1 knocking off an EYBL team, and placed two players on the 2nd, and 3rd team of the event, while another continued to raise his stock with his play. This same group made the trip to Arizona, and were well prepared to show themselves as top prospects from NorCal at this event. Here’s our take on Arsenal 17 Elite in Arizona.

[player_tooltip player_id="947395" first="Oziyah" last="Sellers"] 6’5 Guard of So Cal Academy 2022

Sellers has been steadily raising his level of play since his Freshman year at Modesto Christian. He’s a long rangy guard who’ll have to bulk up a bit, but his skill set is high level. He’s a shooter you call plays for. His use of screens, and his movement without the ball were noticeable. He’ll make dribble drive pull ups, use catch and shoot, and hit 3pt shots with a good level of consistency. He’ll defend multiple positions, and grab a few rebounds.

[player_tooltip player_id="946524" first="Robert" last="Vaihola"] 6’7 Forward of Archbishop Riordan (CA) 2021 (featured Image)

A forward who has improved his game across the board. He has the vision in the post area to spot shooters, and cutters. His ability to score in the paint because of his strength is noticeable. His improved handles allow him to dribble into the paint and by defenders. He can hit the outside shot, and dominate the boards at times. A solid post defender. Recently committed to Fresno State.

[player_tooltip player_id="1173183" first="Jaylen" last="Thompson"] 6’7 W/F of So Cal Academy (CA) 2022

Thompson continues to develop his game from the outside in. He’s improved his ball handling and passing, his jump shot is looking better, but he still has work to do there. Since his Freshman days at St. Joe’s of Alameda, he’s always been effective attacking the baseline, getting inside, and finishing strong off two. He has a knack for drawing fouls. He’s long, and continues to add muscle. He’s an improving defender, and will get his share of rebounds.

[player_tooltip player_id="1112742" first="Broyce" last="Batchan Jr"] 6’2 PG of De Anza HS (CA) 2022

A tough combo guard, who looks to be transitioning into a point guard at the next level, never the less he can score from either position. He has the handles and strength to protect the ball. He showing patience, and improved passing as he looks to involve others. He can get into the paint for his shot, handle contact, and finish most often. He has an improving mid-range jumper, and will knock down 3’s. He’s a tough minded defender as well.

[player_tooltip player_id="950789" first="Kodey" last="Weary"] 6’6 W/F of Weston Ranch HS (CA) 2023

Weary has the tools to be a next level player, he’s in the process. A nice frame, square shoulders, a long wingspan. He can defend multiple positions, his length allows him to block shots, and protect the rim at times. His handles are okay, he’ll rebound and push on occasion. He’ll finish around the basket, and hit the short jumper. Continued strengthening, and skill development will see his stock rise.

[player_tooltip player_id="951935" first="Ahmaree" last="McCullough"] 5’10 PG of St. Joe’s Notre Dame HS (CA) 2023

He’s a determined player who is grasping his role as a pass first point guard. His handles, skills and toughness are intact. He showed good patience up top, his decision making, and pass first was noticeable. He penetrated, got the defenders to commit, found shooters in their spots, and showed good vision sending passes to post players. His mid-range game is improved.

[player_tooltip player_id="1186515" first="Jayden" last="Morris"] 5’9 PG of Sacramento HS (CA) 2022

A solid point guard with good handles, he’s fearless penetrating to the basket, he’ll finds open shooters, feed the post, and push hard in transition, or make long passes up court. He’s one of those under 6’0 players who has the chip on his shoulder, a tough defender, and doesn’t back down. He strong and doesn’t mind mixing it up a bit.
