Stealing the show was Lincoln Supreme 2025, a group of 8th graders who won both their games in decisive fashion over their older opponents.
Here are a few standouts from the first day:
Jagger Cornell, 2024, Columbia Supreme:
A really versatile big, Cornell can rebound and block shots with the other big guys, but he’s got a dynamite shot from deep. The 6-foot-2 forward from Harrisburg, Mo. can catch and shoot, step-back to create space, or set up his deep shot with the dribble. He showed a crossover dribble and ability to penetrate, particularly against bigger defenders. He fights for position under the goal and was one of the leading rebounders on day one.
Kabron Lewis, 2024, Next Level Up:
The word that describes Lewis is “playmaker.” He is a flashy 6-foot-1 guard from Tulsa who is always pushing the envelope, trying to make a highlight play. He is a big guard with a great handle. He always has his eyes up and he finds teammates up the floor. He can make crossover dribbles and spin moves to enter the lane and shoot a runner or dish to a shooter. He has a nice jumper and knocked down some 3-pointers on the first day.
Chuck Love, 2025, Lincoln Supreme (2025):
An impressively long athlete, Love stands out as an advanced 8th grader. He shot the lights out in the first game of the day, demonstrating that he’s deadly if left open. He scored 23 points in that game, and showed off great ball handling ability. He has vision, plays with instinct and anticipation. He intercepted several passes and battled bigger, more physically developed players in the lane. At 6-foot-4, Love has a height advantage over most his age, but it isn’t his height that makes him so impressive. He’s skilled, versatile and sees the floor. When this guy gets in the weight room and develops his frame and vertical, watch out!
Gunnar Lym, 2024, Lincoln Supreme 2:
One of the most impressive guards of day one, Lym is a fighter. He takes a beating and fights through a lot of contact when he’s pushing the ball up the floor. He is aggressive and fearless, but stays under control and makes good decisions. He gets into the lane and draws a ton of fouls. He put up 21 points in a game against Columbia Supreme. He defends, directs teammates and facilitates.
Jacoby Mehrman, 2024, South Dakota Network:
Maybe the best player on day one, Mehrman has an impressive skill set and physical tools to boot. He’s a complete player at 6-foot-3. He can really handle the ball and often acts as point guard for the Network. He scored 23 points against the Minnesota Chill, showing he can score from anywhere and in any fashion. The freshman from Harrisburg, S.D. hit 3-pointers and mid-range jumpers, drove to the glass and finished despite contact. He was really tough on the defensive boards, and frequently took rebounds the length of the court to create opportunities at the other end.
