The 8th Grade Platinum Division was filled with intense, high-level basketball as numerous players stood out. Here are the 2025 Day 1 Standouts from the A-Game Super Shootout.
Meleek Thomas: 6’2 WG New York Lightning, Pittsburgh
Thomas was downright dominant in pool play as defenders had trouble containing him. The 6’2 guard has a nice handle and was effective pushing the tempo in transition. Thomas was able to get by his defender consistently and finished through contact. He has a good release on the jumper and used his hands effectively on the defensive end. Thomas is a talented guard who should make an impact on the varsity level in the near future.
Jermel Thomas: 5’9 PG Riverside Hawks, Bronx (2026)
Thomas may have been playing up all weekend, but he was still able to show out. The 5’9 guard was making great passes all game as he was constantly playing with his head up and making unselfish decisions. Thomas played fast, but never seemed out of control. He was good at finishing around the basket and played solid on-ball defense. Thomas is a true point guard who makes plays with his passing and handle, which should benefit him at the next level.
Judah Hidalgo: 6’3 WG Team Final, Pennsauken, NJ
Hidalgo did not score a ton for Team Final in the opener, but he was still able to make an impact on the game in multiple other ways. The 6’3 wing attacked the glass hard and was tough to box out. Hidalgo threw tremendous outlet passes throughout the first game as he was consistently hitting his teammates in stride. He has a good handle, which he uses to get into the lane. Hidalgo’s ability to impact the game in multiple ways will make him an intriguing prospect to watch throughout his varsity career.
Cash McSweeney: 6’6 PF Garner Road Bulldogs, Charlotte, NC
The Bulldogs made the long trip up from North Carolina, but McSweeney showed no signs of fatigue. The 6’6 forward has a good low post game and a nice touch around the basket. McSweeney also has a good face-up game and his range extends out to the three-point line. He fought for rebounds and was unafraid of attacking the basket against taller defenders. McSweeney is an intriguing stretch four prospect to keep an eye on in the Carolinas.
Olin Chamberlain Jr.: 6’2 WG Team Final, Philadelphia
Chamberlain Jr. had a strong all-around showing for Team Final as he helped them go 2-0 in pool play. The 6’2 wing guard has a good handle and is quite comfortable running the offense. Chamberlain Jr. attacks the basket with confidence as he does not mind drawing contact. He has the ability to defend multiple positions on the floor and can knock down jumpers from distance when given space. Chamberlain Jr.’s skillset allows for him to do many on the floor and should only benefit him throughout his varsity career.
