We have now reached the end of the high school season after last week’s championships in Lakeland. The focus now turns to the off-season and circuit coverage.

This year has been difficult for many prospects looking to extend their careers into college due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the NCAA granted an extra year of eligibility to student-athletes in light of the crisis. This waiver is allowed regardless of how many games, minutes, or scholastic class a player is currently in.

Many seniors are still looking for an opportunity to play at the next level. My hope is that these pieces give attention to those that remained unsigned.

[player_tooltip player_id="818754" first="Khamaury" last="McMillan"] - Miramar

2021 [player_tooltip player_id="818754" first="Khamaury" last="McMillan"] is a tough point guard and on-ball defender. The 6-foot-1 prospect helped Miramar to the BCAA Big 8 championship. McMillan scored 16 points over Western to give the Patriots its second Big 8 title in program history. His play was rewarded with a spot on the all-tournament team. He also helped Miramar to a 7A-14 district championship. McMillan is very quick and has great bounce above the rim. I thought his acceleration was really evident in transition. McMillan’s ball control is crisp and he can finish with an array of moves. That sort of athleticism is great when you combine the fact he avoids careless turnovers. McMillan can also control the tempo and has exceptional vision in the halfcourt. Look for him to find open teammates off dribble penetration with ease. I saw this multiple times with open looks on the perimeter or high efficient baskets underneath he rim. McMillan holds a 3.1 GPA in the classroom.

Onwaja Thomas - Boyd Anderson

There is a lot to like when it comes to Onwaja Thomas. The 6-foot-7 forward averaged 8.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game on 50 percent shooting from the field. Thomas is very long and relentless on the glass. His 46 offensive rebounds nearly match his 49 on the other end of the floor. Against Northeast, Thomas had 17 points, ten rebounds, three steals and four blocks. He is a versatile piece with a strong motor.

[player_tooltip player_id="714896" first="Gabriel" last="Gonzalez"]- Southwest

Gonzalez was electric in his final season with the Eagles. The 6-foot shooting guard averaged 17.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and three assists on 50 percent shooting from the field. Moreover, Gonzalez shot 79 percent (90-of-114) from the free-throw line. Against Coral Gables, he scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds on 9-of-18 shooting from the field. He helped Southwest to a 16-3 overall record this season. Gonzalez is a three-level scorer on the offensive end.

Jerry Maxinaud - Boyd Anderson

Another successful frontline player for Boyd Anderson was Jerry Maxinaud. The 6-foot-7 forward/center averaged 5.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game on 45 percent shooting from the field. Maxinaud was a machine on the glass with 126 total boards. Against American Heritage, he grabbed 17 alone. Maxinaud has potential to improve on offense but has tremendous ability to protect the rim.

[player_tooltip player_id="1068706" first="Maximo" last="Moratinos"] - Mater Lakes Academy

Moratinos was one of the more athletic kids I saw this season coming off the wing. The 6-foot-6 forward averaged 5.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game for the Bears. Moratinos is a very difficult player to guard coming off the perimeter. He can use his length and athleticism to penetrate into the lane and finish above the rim. This aspect of his game was also lethal in transition when opponents failed to get a body on him. He also has a background in Volleyball so you know he is a tremendous leaper. A lot of basketball upside in my opinion given his wingspan. A natural factor with his frame around the glass.I think with the right coach in the right system, he has a chance to develop.
