Class 1A has two of the most exciting players in the state playing at its level. When one looks a little deeper, 1A has three of the top five players in the 2021 class. The first team in class 1A is probably a given (we will see what the LSWA thinks). However, the second team is probably wide open with possible contenders. In this postseason predictions, we will take a look at who I believe makes the all-state 1st team and some of the numerous possibilities for the all-state second team.

Class 1A 1st team (projected)

[player_tooltip player_id="765904" first="Keon" last="Coleman"] (6’4″ Senior / Opelousas Catholic)

[player_tooltip player_id="765931" first="Gage" last="Larvadain"] (5’10″ Senior / Riverside)

[player_tooltip player_id="1045508" first="Kurt" last="Labeaud"] (6’0″ Senior / Crescent City)

[player_tooltip player_id="765923" first="Daniel" last="Ortiz"] (6’1″ Senior / Calvary Baptist)

[player_tooltip player_id="566569" first="Derrick" last="Tezeno"] (6’4″ Senior / North Central)

This class may be the easiest first team to select. Tezeno has been a two time first team selection and this will be his third. Derrick has also been the top player in the state this season. Coleman was district 5-1A MVP over Tezeno this season after sharing the trophy last year. Following two years of being on the second team, he should clearly be a first team selection. [player_tooltip player_id="765931" first="Gage" last="Larvadain"] was one of the top two sport athletes in the state with football and basketball offers. He was phenomenal during the season from three point land as well as 40 point scoring games. [player_tooltip player_id="765923" first="Daniel" last="Ortiz"] was Mr. Consistent filling up the stat sheet. He was district 1-1A MVP and was an integral part of the Cavaliers state runner-up run. [player_tooltip player_id="1045508" first="Kurt" last="Labeaud"] was the unquestioned leader of the Crescent City Pioneers championship season. It did not hurt that he averaged 17 (points) and 8 (assist) with 5 rebounds per game to boot. If this is not the 1A first team, I will be surprised.

Class 1A 2nd team contenders

Donald "DJ" Lewis (6’7″ Junior / Central Catholic) - Lewis won the 8-1A district MVP and almost lead his team to a comeback win over state runner-up Calvary Baptist. If there is one player who could probably break into the first team because of his numbers, it could be him.

[player_tooltip player_id="1045516" first="Khyrese" last="Taylor"] (5’10″ Senior / Arcadia) - The most outstanding player from the state championship game is one of the better all-around guards in the state. He can score at all three levels and is a disruptor on defense. I can easily see him making the second team. He is another that I could see being on the first team but I do not think he will have the numbers to back that up.

Randarius Morris (6’4″ Sophomore / Northwood-Lena) - The 6’4" sophomore put up a double-double for the season and helped lead the Gators to a Marsh Madness appearance. The way he finished the season may help him get selected to the team. If he does not get selected, he will probably be a locked in the next two seasons.

[player_tooltip player_id="781860" first="Labree" last="Williams"] (6’6″ Junior / Calvary Baptist) - Williams averaged 16 and 12 playing out of position as the lone post threat for Calvary Baptist. His knack for scoring around the basket was impressive as well. I think he is a second team lock. While he has a strong case for 1st team, it is not in the cards for him this year.

[player_tooltip player_id="781856" first="Reginald" last="Stoner"] (6’1″ Junior / North Central) - It is a shame that we did not get to see Stoner at 100% during Marsh Madness. Regardless, Stoner is another player who I believe is a lock for the 2nd team. His offensive numbers are very good. His defense is what sets him apart from the rest.

Denzel Baines (6’3″ Senior / Northwood-Lena) - Since most award lists like to reward seniors, Baines is one that will probably get some consideration. Averaging 15 (points) and 11 (rebounds) is another trait that will get him noticed by the writers. It may be enough for the 2nd team but we will see.

[player_tooltip player_id="1055170" first="John" last="Kelly"] (6’7″ Sophomore / Crescent City) - Kelly may be the best player in the 2023 class when it is all said and done. His title game MOP trophy was an award he won because he displayed his complete skill set when it mattered the most. Kelly has the goods to be 1A most of standing player and he will have two years to show it.

There will be others in contention from the many regions of class 1A. [player_tooltip player_id="970126" first="Omarion" last="Layssard"] (Northwood-Lena), Jaqualon Crane (Arcadia), and Jervante Greene (White Castle) will be in the mix as well. Check your local newspaper for the all-state team announcement in the next week.
