Prep Hoops is here to highlight the most outstanding team and players from the Inter-Academic League's (Inter-Ac) 2020-21 season.

Team of the Year:

To say the Covid-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on the Inter-Ac season is an understatement. A delayed start was followed by multiple canceled games, the stoppage of one contest at half-time and lengthy pauses for the Penn Charter and SCHA programs. Thus, no official regular season Inter-Ac champion was crowned this winter.

However Prep Hoops would like to take a minute to acknowledge the excellent season the Haverford School boys basketball team assembled in these unprecedented times. Led by superstar [player_tooltip player_id="991188" first="Jameel" last="Brown"] and his running mates [player_tooltip player_id="990963" first="Christian" last="Clover"] (10.7 ppg), [player_tooltip player_id="991176" first="Zach" last="Genther"] (9.3 ppg), Bernie Rogers (7.8 ppg) and Isiah Boyd (4.5 ppg), the Fords won 5 straight games to close out the season. Included in that stretch were wins over talented and experienced arch rival Malvern Prep (6-2) as well as an excellent Germantown Academy (6-3) squad. Haverford finished with a 7-2 record (2-1 vs 2nd place MP), tops in the Inter-Ac for the 2020-21 season.

Player of the Year:

[player_tooltip player_id="990929" first="Jordan" last="Longino"] – 6’1” / Senior / Germantown Academy / Combo Guard: Longino is widely considered one of the top guards in the state (2019-20 Inter-Ac and Class 4A State Player of the Year) and nationally he is a Top 50 ranked 2021 prospect. He only enhanced that insane resume here in 2021. This winter the elite 3-level scorer hit for a Inter-Ac best 21.9 ppg on 54% shooting from the field. Additionally, Longino was a force on teh boards fro GA -- 6.7 rebounds per game. Highlights from his senior campaign feature two thirty point outbursts: a 30-spot in a W over Episcopal Academy and 31 points (10-11 on FTAs including the game winners with :09 left) vs. Haverford during a double OT victory for the Patriots. Longino also notched 27 points (3 threes) vs. Malvern Prep and 26 points (3 threes) in a convincing 72-47 win over Episcopal Academy. Longino (Villanova commit) continued to add to his trophy case this season when he passed Alvin Williams (Villanova / Toronto Raptors) to become the all-time leading scorer in GA history. Longino ends his storied career at Germantown Academy with 1,763 points which will be a very difficult total for anyone to surpass.

Newcomer of the Year:

Kevin McCarthy – 6’2” / Freshman / Episcopal Academy / Wing: Like every other team in the Inter-Ac, Episcopal’s season was impacted by the pandemic, but injuries also hit EA’s roster hard and Head Coach Brian Shanahan was forced to string together lineups. The results in the standings weren’t pretty (1 win), but in this unprecedented season EA found a future star in 2024 prospect McCarthy (11.8 ppg and 3 rpg). Once he was inserted into the lineup, McCarthy quickly provided a consistent threat from behind the arc (39% on 3PAs) and increased basketball IQ for the Churchmen. However, over the last 10 days of the season, McCarthy proved to be a dead eye shooter who should play at the next level. McCarthy started his blazing hot stretch of shooting with a then-career-high 17 points (5 threes) in a disappointing loss to SCHA. In the rematch with SCHA, McCarthy established a new career high of 18 points (4 threes) and helped EA get their only win of the season. He ended the 2020-21 season with games of 17 (4 threes) and 15 points (3 threes). We can’t wait to see what type of prospect McCarthy (48% on FGAs) develops into over the next couples of years.

1st Team All Inter-AC:

[player_tooltip player_id="991188" first="Jameel" last="Brown"] – 6’4” / Junior / Haverford School / Combo Guard: As a freshman, (12 ppg.) he helped guide the Fords to a 28-0 record and a state title. Unfortunately Brown’ sophomore year was shut down by a broken wrist. He returned this winter fully healed and playing with a chip on his shoulder. All the elements of Brown’s elite game were on display this season -- long range shooting, high basketball IQ, outstanding work on the boards and off-the-charts athleticism. Once again this season Brown displayed the unique ability to take over a game without forcing the action or playing hero ball. A true combo-guard, he averaged 21.7 ppg to go along with 8 rpg. and 3 apg. He posted 20+ in numerous games this season, but two efforts in particular really standout: his 23 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks in a win over Malvern Prep and Brown’s 29 points (3 threes) in a double OT loss to Germantown Academy. Brown has one year left at Haverford, so you still have time to witness this phenom in person. He is committed to Purdue and Head Coach Matt Painter is getting one hell of a prospect.

Will Delaney – 6’0” / Senior / Episcopal Academy / Combo Guard: For an athlete who is committed to play defense for Hofstra lacrosse, Delaney sure did a lot of scoring on the basketball court this winter. Using his high level 3-point shooting (39% on 3PAs) and ability to create for himself off the dribble, Delaney averaged 15.4 ppg. He splashed home 4 threes and tallied 22 total points against SCHA. After a 15 point night in the rematch against SCHA, Delaney hit for another 15 points against Penn Charter. Still, Delaney saved his best for the last game of his basketball career. In the season finale vs Haverford, Delaney scored a season high 23 points on the strength of 6 made threes. In that contest Delaney also pumped in 8 points during a 31-second span of the 4th quarter. Hofstra MBB Head Coach Joe Mihalich would be smart to offer Delaney a walk-on spot for next season.

[player_tooltip player_id="990948" first="Rahdir" last="Hicks"] – 6’0” / Senior / Malvern Prep / Point Guard: A two-time 1st Team All-Inter-Ac selection as well as a 2019-20 DLN 1st Team All-Area choice, Hicks averaged 12.5 ppg. last season while playing alongside 5A State POY Deuce Turner (Now at Bucknell). With Turner’s graduation, Hicks was thrust into the role of No. 1 option for the Friars and he responded with a great season (15.8 ppg). Highlighting Hicks’ senior season was a 23 point night in a win over Germantown Academy as well as a stretch of games to close the season where he scored 18 points or more per contest. Included in that impressive end of season run was a 24 and 10 double-double (plus 7 assists) vs arch rival Haverford. Hicks ended his MP career with a near triple-double (11/9/9) in an 81-58 blowout win over SCHA. Hicks has exceptional ball handling skills that allow him to get into the lane for lay-ins or pass out to open teammates on the perimeter. A true floor general, Hicks limits his mistakes and can direct a team in the half-court. He has also shown the ability to hit from long range. His offensive production cannot be missed (1,190 career points). Still, it should also be noted that over the last four years, Hicks (Committed to Towson) earned a reputation as one the fiercest perimeter defenders in the Philly area.

[player_tooltip player_id="990929" first="Jordan" last="Longino"] – 6’1” / Senior / Germantown Academy / Combo Guard: (see above POY write-up)

Fran Oschell – 6’7” / Senior / Malvern Prep / Power Forward: With Hicks becoming the primary scoring option for Malvern this season, Oschell was expected to ascend to a capable No. 2 option. The long and skilled forward did that (14 ppg) and then some for Malvern. Oschell provided the MP lineup with a valuable stretch-4 style player who can hit the three or play on the interior. He produced 17 points vs Haverford School; 18 pts in a win over Episcopal Academy and then 20 vs GA. Oschell also posted 13 points and 13 boards double-double in a rematch win over Haverford (The eventual 2020-21 Inter-AC regular season champion.). He wrapped up his senior hoops season with three straight games in which he contributed 16 or more points for the Friars. Another athlete who excels in two-sports, Oschell is committed to Duke for baseball.
