The best week of the year has started off strong with a 6 game slate for Classes 1A, 2A, 3A. I was able to watch the last 4 games of the day, and they were full of high level play and even higher level talent. Here were the results:

Bishop McLaughlin v. Andrew Jackson, Class 3A Semifinals, 79-71 Bishop McLaughlin wins

Miami Country Day School v. Calvary Christian Academy, Class 3A Semifinals, 69-51 Calvary wins

Central v. Crossroads Academy, Class 1A Semifinals, 85-63 Central wins

Wildwood v. Madison County, Class 1A Semifinals, 41-62 Wildwood wins

Here are the frontcourt standouts for 1A, Day 1:

[player_tooltip player_id="818744" first="Tristan" last="Wright"], Central, 6’6", 2021

Someone sign this kid now! Wright was absolutely one of my favorite players to watch this year and has such a natural feel for the game. He isn’t someone you look at and immediately think will dominate a game, but he absolutely did. The big fella scored 13 points to go with 13 rebounds in a dominant win. His IQ is massive and he knows when he can and can’t score. His passing is next level, and every time he touches the ball it somehow ends up in the perfect spot for a teammate to score or break a press. He took less than 20 dribbles the whole game, and yet, his passing made him enough of a threat to warrant a full court press. This kid is fundamentally solid and is definitely one of the highlights of Day 1 for me.

[player_tooltip player_id="818912" first="Joe" last="Poyser"], Wildwood, 6’5", 2021

Poyser is an athlete and a half. His bounce is lethal around the rim, and he can get where he needs to with ease. He scored 22 points and nabbed 11 rebounds in the win over Madison County, and did most of it while playing with 3-4 fouls. He was delicate around the rim instead of bullish which helped him stay in the game where most centers would have fouled out. He was able to play solid defense without fouling down the stretch, an oft underappreciated skill that gave him and Wildwood an edge. He’s a big fella with a soft touch and will be a great matchup for [player_tooltip player_id="818744" first="Tristan" last="Wright"] in the championship game Friday.

[player_tooltip player_id="818687" first="Alfred" last="Corbin"], Wildwood, 6’4", 2021

I’m putting Corbin here as a wing/frontcourt player despite his technical classification as guard because I think he’s a point forward who is lethal around the basket. He’s a great finisher with the strength tools to finish on anyone, and he made that very apparent in his 13 points outing against Madison County. He’s also the main man on defense, and will given the tough task of trying to slow down [player_tooltip player_id="818963" first="Trenton" last="Moye"] on Friday night.
