2020-2021 Western New York Season Review

High School Basketball tipped off in Western New York in mid-February 2021. This article will touch on how the Canisius Crusaders have started their season.

Canisius - 7-1 Overall

Reigning League Champion Canisius has been dominating thus far, outscoring all opponents 643-461. They are 8-1 overall and 7-1 in Monsignor Martin League play, with their lone loss coming to rival St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute by a score of 87-72.

So far, Wil Pieroni has been a bright spot for the Crusaders in 2021. The 6’3” Senior guard is valuable to his team because his athleticism off the bench can be a major weapon. The springy Pieroni also plays volleyball; those skills translate to the hardwood, as you can see how well he is able to time his jumps. On a deep team, Pieroni has earned minutes thus far through his ability to come in cold off the bench and fill any defensive assignment that is given to him.

Junior Luke Ingrando is another player who is starting to carve out a role for himself through his play thus far. In the early season, he has shown that he is willing and able to stretch the floor and take three-pointers. He is scoring 0.5 points per possession thus far; while that number is not fantastic, it is important to take into account that he has only appeared in 4 games. Ingrando’s shot form is quick and steady, so the Crusaders ought to feel good about continuing to let him hunt his shot.

[player_tooltip player_id="1047755" first="Malik" last="Jemison"] has made the most of his opportunities so far in his last season of High School Basketball. He is a true dual-threat player, having shown an ability to make plays on both sides of the floor. He is a smart and willing passer and tough to deal with when he hounds you on defense. He is averaging 1.2 steals per game; if he can keep up with or even exceed that output by the end of the year, the Tigers will become even tougher to beat.
