Davies took the lead early in the game and was in control for most of the first half, they led by 9 going into halftime. The Eagles came out of the break soaring. Their high-powered offense was running on all cylinders early in the second half. With 11:43 left in the game they built the lead up to 20-points. At that point, the Packers started their comeback and began to chip away at the lead. West Fargo completed their come back and both teams traded baskets in the last couple minutes of the game to keep the fans on their toes. West Fargo was dealing with foul trouble and had 3 players foul out of the game. The Eagles had too much firepower tonight. Look out for Davies, they are the real deal!
Here are the top players from the game:
1. Carson Hegerle Carson Hegerle 6'3" | SG West Fargo | 2022 State ND (2022) |6-4 G| West Fargo – A game-high 36 points, with one 3-pointer, and 5-6 from the line. Carson’s athleticism and explosiveness were on display in this one. He put in multiple short one-handed pull-up jumpers in the game. With his quickness and leaping ability, he was able to get his shot off whenever he wanted. I was impressed with how he posted up tonight and how he used his strength when fighting for position. I liked how he used his crossover dribble for separation and then he went into his pull-up jumper. Carson had multiple offensive boards and put backs. His lone 3-pointer came from the top of the key in the second half. He had a nice “And 1” lob bucket that showed his athleticism. He had another “AND 1” bucket off a BLOB. Carson drew 2 player-control fouls from Davies. That shows he is interested in more than just scoring. When he is finishing at the basket it looks like Carson is jumping off a trampoline and everyone else is left watching. I liked the steal that he turned into a quick 2-points in transition. I loved how he posted and sealed against the zone late in the game when Davies went into a zone defense. He was on fire last night and showed that he is worthy of being an All-State player.
2. Latrel Davis Latrel Davis 6'6" | SF Fargo Davies | 2021 State ND (2021) |6-3 G| Fargo Davies – 19 points, 4 triples, and 3-5 from the line. He had an unbelievable left-handed jam, right in someone’s face and he was fouled on the play. If someone sends that dunk into ESPN it deserves to be a top 10 play. Latrel is turning into a complete scorer, he did damage from all over the court. He was tough on the O-boards last night. I like how high he elevates to snatch the ball when boarding it. I love his long first step and how athletic/versatile he is when finishing. His finger-roll finishes look like works of art. He was knocking down 3-pointers from the wings and from both corners. Latrel is a tough matchup because he is long enough to finish over guards, and he is too athletic for bigger forwards to stay with him. He had a big-time block down the stretch to help seal the victory. Latrel is playing exceptionally well as of late and is looking like an All-State player.
3. Brett Limke Brett Limke 6'1" | PG West Fargo | 2022 State ND (2022) |6-1 G| West Fargo – 25 points, 3 three-pointers, and 6-6 from the charity stripe. He was sensational again from the line. Brett showed off his range with a deep college-three from the top of the key. I appreciate the flow he plays with, never in a hurry, and always on time when making a play. I liked his drive through traffic and finish right before the end of the first half. Brett’s mid-range jumper looked great last night. He had an impressive cut and finish, which showed he does not always have to create his own shot with the dribble. Brett showed great effort when hustling after a loose ball offensive-rebound. He made an amazing bank shot/runner in transition with the defender directly in his face. Brett made a monster-3 late in the game when the Packers were on their comeback. I was impressed with his quickness and open-court breakaway speed. Is he the best PG in the EDC?
4. Ian Motschenbacher Ian Motschenbacher 6'1" | PG Fargo Davies | 2022 State ND (2022) |6-0 G| Fargo Davies – 24 points, one 3-pointer, and 5-6 from the FT-line. He excels at making unorthodox and difficult shots in the paint. I like how he gets in the lane and makes plays happen. Ian had a nice lob pass to Heckner from the 3-point line. I think he has the best footwork around the basket of any guard I have seen this season. He made an amazing hesitation move to get by his defender and he finished it with a reverse lay-up. I like that he can finish with strength or finesse depending on the situation. He has a quality jump-shot that he uses in the perfect situations. Ian had a clutch drive and basket in overtime when Davies needed points. I liked his calm and clutch FT’s in overtime. He gives maximum effort on every play and is not afraid to out-work the opposing team. Ian has played himself into being one of the top PG’s in the EDC.
5. Owen Hektner Owen Hektner 6'6" | SF Fargo Davies | 2021 State ND (2021) |6-7 F| Fargo Davies – 20 points, three 3-pointers, and 5-7 from the charity stripe. He showed nice timing and touch with his jump-shot. Owen had back-to-back possession with 3-pointers in the first half. The first was from the top of the key with a hand in his face and the second was from the left-wing. His third 3-pointer of the first half came from the right-wing right before halftime. Owen showed off his hops when he went up to catch a lob pass and finished the basket all in one motion. He is a confident free-throw shooter, and he put in some big shots in overtime.
6. Carter Birrenkott Carter Birrenkott 6'5" | PF West Fargo | 2021 State ND (2021) |6-5 F| West Fargo – 19 points and 1-2 from the FT-line. For such a big strong player he sure shoots with a soft touch. His mid-range jumper was on cue last night. He did a nice job of passing the ball. He dropped a dime to a cutting Limke for 2-points. Carter also had a nice high-low pass to Pease. I like the strong spin-move that he uses to create separation. Carter is a beast on the O-boards, and he had multiple putbacks for points. I like how he jump-stops in the lane, gathers himself, and finishes strong. Carter had a big-time bucket with 7.2 seconds left to tie the game. Carter has been a double-double machine all season and will be in the discussion for the EDC Senior-Athlete of The Year.
7. Joel Pease Joel Pease 6'5" | SF West Fargo | 2021 State ND (2021) |6-5 F| West Fargo – 15 points and three triples. He was battling foul trouble all night so he had to sit out more than he normally would. Joel was shooting it great from the outside and was playing with confidence. I was intrigued with a crafty reverse layup that he made in the first half. He racked up the O-boards again last night. When he is spotting up for 3-pointers he has great feet, and he gets set quickly. Joel showed his strength with a spin-move basket off a BLOB play. He blocked a shot with his long arms. He did some damage with his back to the basket, which showed his versatility.
8. Brady Sauvageau (2021) |6-2 G| Fargo Davies – 16 points in the game and two triples. He is a versatile defender. Brady had an athletic blocked-shot in the first half. He knocked down 3-pointers in both halves. I liked his aggressiveness when attacking the basket in the second half. I was impressed with a physical, athletic finish that he had in the second half. He bullied his way to the basket. Brady had a key offensive rebound bucket to take the lead with 1:12 left in the game.
9. Raymond Brown Raymond Brown 5'11" | PG Fargo Davies | 2023 State ND (2023) |5-11 G| Fargo Davies – 10 points, one triple, and 1-2 from the line. He showed off his hustle and quickness when grabbing rebounds. His 3-pointer came from the right-corner, he has nice form. I liked how he attacked the basket early in the second half. Raymond is extraordinarily fast, he showed this off with a coast-to-coast layup.
10. Mason Klabo (2025) |5-10 G| Fargo Davies – 3 points from 1 three-pointer. He does not look like an 8th grader out there. He blends right in with the rest of the players. His 3-pointer came from the right-wing and he only needed an inch to get it off. His coach has great confidence in him because he was logging minutes in overtime.
