The annual DWU/Culver’s Classic was played this weekend. Who were the top players from the event? PHD gives you the best of the best as our Weekend Starting Five.

[player_tooltip player_id="812196" first="Kalen" last="Garry"] (6’3 Jr Guard) of De Smet. Garry put together the top performance at the event with a 36 point, dozen rebound game in a 76-63 victory over White River. Garry’s most memorable play for the number one ranked team in the state was a spring into a swat that had people in the crowd going wild. Garry recently became his school’s all time leading scorer.

[player_tooltip player_id="975502" first="Gradee" last="Sherman"] (6’5 Sr PF) of Viborg/Hurley. Sherman’s 20 point, 12 rebound double-double led the Cougars over Aberdeen Christian in a match-up of top ten teams. This is a player that just earlier in the week totaled 36 points and 23 boards in a game so double-doubles have been the regular. To get one in a big win in the Corn Palace was even more important.

[player_tooltip player_id="975569" first="Chase" last="Merrill"] (6’3 Sr Wing) of Canistota. In another top ten battle, Canistota beat Dell Rapids St. Mary 61-56. Merrill announced his commitment to DWU just two weeks ago so after the game he posed with his future coaches as the game MVP. Worthy? Most definitely. Merrill had 23 points, five rebounds, and threes steals.

[player_tooltip player_id="975595" first="Brendan" last="Wentland"] (6’0 Sr SG) of Corsica-Stickney. The Jags have won 8 of 9 games and in that time Wentland has been excellent. He’s had a buzzer beater game winner, a couple double doubles, and Saturday Brendan put up 27 points and six boards to knock off Freeman Academy 67-61.

[player_tooltip player_id="975531" first="Tisyn" last="Spader"] (6’4 Sr Wing) of Howard. In yet another top ten Class B match-up, future DWU wing [player_tooltip player_id="975531" first="Tisyn" last="Spader"] attacked left and hit a one handed shot over a defender for the 47-45 Howard game winner. Spader put up 16 points and 8 rebounds in a hotly contested game and nothing was bigger than his shot just before the buzzer.

Next Up

[player_tooltip player_id="963772" first="Ethan" last="Cheeseman"] (6’4 Soph Forward) of Hanson. The Beavers earned a key victory over Class A top ten squad Chamberlain 56-42. Chamberlain had a terrible time trying to defend Cheeseman who put up 18 points and eight boards. As far as underclassmen go, Ethan had the biggest day in the Corn Palace.

[player_tooltip player_id="975503" first="Ryan" last="Wojcik"] (6’2 Sr PF) of St. Thomas More. Wojcik brought the muscle for the Cavs making sure his team earned an important victory over fellow top ten Class A team Dell Rapids. Wojcik missed a double-double by one rebound with his 15 point, nine rebound game.
