To me, it’s chasing loose balls out of bounds, getting back on defense to stop a fast break, hitting the gas after getting a steal on a fast break, etc. This is list is not about the prospects that went for 20 points and 10 boards, this is about the prospects that continued to battle even when the times got tough this weekend.
I wanted to give a list of kids that I thought were notable for the best hustle I saw this weekend in Indianapolis. We dive back into the Class of 2027 and the “All-Hustle Team” from the NEXT Heartland Kickoff from Fishers High School. It took a first team and second team to get all the Hustle from the weekend!
FIRST TEAM
Gael Gutierrez | Chicago, IL | Chicago Demons EYG | Class of 2027
Gutierrez looked to be one of the stronger links on this Chicago Demons EYG team. In my eyes, Gutierrez kept on his grind regardless of what the scoreboard said on Saturday morning. Whether that was on the offense or defensive side of the ball, this prospect just kept playing for the love of the game.
Jarron Boone | Homeschool | Team Teague 2028 Boyd | Class of 2028
Boone had no issue on Saturday morning finding his spot on the outside arch and making a three-pointer. The 5’3 guard prospect was hustling around the circle, trying to working hard to find his spot. He found his spot plenty of times in their first game of the day and made the most of it.
AJ Lee | Shepherdsville, KY | Team Manimal | Class of 2027
Lee showed off some solid handles for his age and also showed what he could do on the defensive end, which was superb on one transition I saw. The overall defensive outing he put together is what sold him to make our 2027 All-Hustle Team.
Kaylin Brooks | Elkhart, IN | Team Teague 2028 Boyd | Class of 2028
Brooks ability to close up the passing lanes against the Chicago Demons. Brooks is a 5’2 guard, but his length in his arms is what stood out to me on Saturday. I think once this prospect hits a growth spurt, he’ll be even more elusive from a defensive standpoint and grab more loose balls as the offense comes his way.
Griffin Weis | Louisville, KY | Team Manimal | Class of 2027
Weis showed his efficiency in the game I watched. One of his best plays? He got a crafty steal and then hit the gas for an easy layup. That is what we call hustle, for sure! Weis a very long 5’10 prospect that has the versatility to guard anyone. One of two prospects to come out of St Patrick’s Catholic in Louisville on our lists this week.
SECOND TEAM
Josiah Payne | Chicago, IL | Chicago Demons | Class of 2027
Zaelyn Clay | Anderson, IN | Team Teague 2027 Evans | Class of 2027
