Section 8, the public school league in Nassau County on Long Island started up their season this week. Unfortunately, most schools are not allowing any spectators. But they are filming their games on youtube. Many coaches are sending film from their games. Here are some players who lived up to the hype and also some who we will get to know quickly.

Game Results: Elmont 79. Jericho. 50

Chike Ndefo 6”5. 2023. Elmont HS

Chike was a major factor in this win for Elmont. He showed the toughness to finish at the rim. Had a nice soft touch on his jumper. Also altered shots and protected the paint. Led Elmont in scoring with 19.

Jayden Watkins. 5”11. 2023. Elmont HS

Another young player for Elmont who looked very seasoned. An excellent passer. Very slick handle. Creates for himself and his teammates. Was very good on the ball defending. He chipped in 10 points.

[player_tooltip player_id="1048063" first="Yaewon" last="You"]. 6”0. 2021. Jericho HS

A player who a lot of hoops guys were waiting to see, did not disappoint. Yaewon was very impressive. Leading all scorers with 22. He showed the ability to play either guard spot. Displayed his unlimited range but also his knack for getting inside.

Game result: Lynbrook. 53. Plainedge 40

Joseph Andrew Iadevio. 5”11. 2022. Plainedge HS

Plainedge lost to Lynbrook. But you could see why a lot of coaches respect this player. A never give up attitude. Doing what it takes to give his team a chance. Competes on every possession. He is a pesky tough defender. Really good shooter beyond the arc. Hit 4 deep threes in leading all scorers with 21.

Matt Lindeman. 5”10. 2022. Syossett HS

An unselfish true point guard. Excellent on the ball defender. Also real good at jumping the passing lanes. A disruptor on defense and a floor general on offense. Good rebounder for his size and position. A big reason Syossett is off to a 2-0 start.

[player_tooltip player_id="1048062" first="Mekhi" last="Beckett"]. 6”4 2021. Mephan HS

With an offer from Seton Hall and other D1 interest. Mekhi did not disappoint in the first week of games. Showing a game that gets it done inside and out. Strong with the ball, getting to the basket. He is a player who scores in bunches and takes over games.
