First things first, I hope everyone had a safe and Happy New Year. The beginning of January brings another batch of exciting games and scouting here in South Florida. Please feel free to reach out to me on my socials for any information regarding players across the area.

Let’s jump into my observations...

[player_tooltip player_id="709256" first="Jamai" last="Hager-Tejada"] - Mater Lakes Academy

2023 [player_tooltip player_id="709256" first="Jamai" last="Hager-Tejada"] was a killer against McArthur on Monday night. The 5-foot-10 combo guard scored a game-high 35 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the field. Moreover, Tejada knocked down three 3-pointers and got to the free-throw line 16 times. In my opinion, he had the highest grade of any player on the night. Tejada was aggressive attacking the rim, especially in the second half and in the fourth quarter. Overall, he is averaging 17.9 points per game through ten contests. Tejada should continue to develop, especially as a point guard. In addition, he is likely to grow a bit more and fill out his frame. I think Tejada is the Bears best offensive weapon all-around.

Johaun Myles - McArthur

On the flipside Monday, 2022 Johaun Myles had the best grade for the Mustangs against the Bears. The 6-foot-3 guard scored a team-high 16 points on seven makes. Myles ran the offense well and set-up his teammates for shot opportunities around the perimeter. He is a good ball-handler and can get to the rim due to his athleticism. I like his future to get somewhere on the next level.

[player_tooltip player_id="1068706" first="Maximo" last="Moratinos"] - Mater Lakes

2021 [player_tooltip player_id="1068706" first="Maximo" last="Moratinos"] is your classic inside-out weapon. The 6-foot-6 small forward has the size to be disruptive around the rim and the athleticism to explode into the lane from the perimeter. Moratinos scored 12 points and grabbed ten rebounds on 5-of-10 shooting from the field against the Mustangs. In addition, give credit to 2021 [player_tooltip player_id="818830" first="Julian" last="Garcia"]. The 5-foot-10 shooting guard scored 14 points and knocked down three 3-pointers. He is the type of kid you do not want to leave open and can score in bunches.

Allan Singletary - McArthur

While not the biggest guy on the Mustangs frontline, 2021 Allen Singletary played with a lot of passion and aggression against Mater Lakes. The 6-foot-2 forward scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Moreover, Singletary got to the free-throw line and knocked down five of his attempts. I thought he was a fighter in the paint and gave McArthur a huge lift.

[player_tooltip player_id="818705" first="Taderrius" last="Davis"] - Miami High

2021 [player_tooltip player_id="818705" first="Taderrius" last="Davis"] did his job (and more) against Coral Park on Wednesday night. The 6-foot-7 wing had 23 points,17 rebounds, seven assists and ten blocks on 9-of-14 shooting from the field. While Davis clearly had a length and size advantage against the Rams, he played from the tip to the final buzzer with assertion. You are not going to play "Duke" in every game you play. Davis draws a lot of attention whether he has the ball or not. For example, he was doubled on plays and made the correct pass to his open teammates. In addition, that vision plus his athleticism allows him to shadow as a point guard in certain sets. On the defensive end, his presence can cause opponents to hesitate at the rim or force a contested pass. The standout senior is a 5-tool player with a college future regardless of the opponent.

Josh Fernandez - Coral Park

Despite the loss, Coral Park has a lot of talent on its roster. 2022 Josh Fernandez is a good example. The 6-foot shooting guard scored 13 points and knocked down three 3-pointers against the Stingarees. I thought at times Fernandez could have been more aggressive, but he connected on open shots presented to him. I was also impressed with 2021 James Tirador. The 5-foot-10 guard scored nine points and hit a pair of 3-pointers. Moreover, Tirador is a good rebounder at his position with at least six boards against Miami High.

For any South Florida Prep Hoops news or inforamtion...please contact Michael Costeines @Steins_23 on Instagram or follow him on Twitter @Mungertown_Mike23.
