The end of January has seen teams deal with pandemic, take holiday break, play tournaments and work through roster shakeups. It’s a good time to take a mid-season look at how things are going. Here’s an update on the Flint Hills League:

Best Team:

Lyndon is currently ranked #7 in 2A. The Tigers gave Mulvane, a top 4A team, all it could handle. But then they turned around were upset by Burlingame. In light of the Burlingame loss, Osage City could make a strong claim for tops in the league…except they lost to Lyndon 49-40 a couple of weeks ago.

Stars:

Luke Detwiler, senior, Lyndon:

Detwiler put up 18 against Mulvane, and is consistently in the upper-double figures. The 6-foot guard has a well-rounded game, helping out on the boards and kicking the ball to teammates. He doesn’t shoot a ton of threes, but he’s capable from beyond the arc too.

Dayton Logan, senior, Mission Valley:

The 6-foot-5 forward is big and solid, but can operate around the perimeter. He works the boards, finds his open teammates, and is intimidating on the defensive end. He has games of 23, 20 and 18.

Gunnar Fort, senior, Osage City:

The 6-foot-3 senior is making up for lost time after missing last season due to injury. He racked up 20 or more points in three games and averages about 17 per game. Like Detweiler, Fort isn’t just bombing from deep. He plays a versatile game and contributes in every area.

Risers:

Landon Boss, sophomore, Osage City:

Fort’s 6-foot-1 sidekick is just adding to the excellent season he had as a freshman. He has scored at least 16 points in nearly every game this season, and has high games of 36 against Central Heights and 26 against KC Christian.

Cooper Schroer, sophomore, Chase County:

The 6-foot-2 guard has been a steady contributor and occasionally scores in big quantities, like the 23 he tallied against West Franklin.

[player_tooltip player_id="1076401" first="Koen" last="Hula"], junior, Council Grove:

After a slow start, Hula, and the Braves, are putting things together. After a big sophomore season, a lot was expected of Council Grove’s big man. He has recently put together some games of 16 or 17 points each outing. Hula is a hard-working, inside-out player.

Jerrod Campbell, junior, Northern Heights:

After averaging just 3 points as a sophomore, Campbell had to take up a heavy load due to graduation. The 5-foot-10 junior responded by putting up games of 15, 11 and 10.

Jackson Biggs, sophomore, Lyndon:

Biggs was a nice contributor as a freshman, and he is playing a big role for the #7 ranked Tigers. The 6-foot-5 forward currently averages about 6.5 points per game, and makes a big impact on the boards and at the defensive end.

Unsung Heroes:

Joel Deters, junior, Mission Valley:

After not making much of an impact on the varsity last year, the 5-foot-10 guard is really showing what he can do this year. He is a remarkably consistent performer, scoring between 9 and 16 points in every game.

Braden Heins, junior, Northern Heights:

The 6-foot-2 junior had to fill big shoes after the graduation of all-leaguers [player_tooltip player_id="885591" first="Cameron" last="Heiman"] and Tee Preisner. He’s strong the boards and can really score from deep. With a high game of 22, Heins is averaging about 13 points per game.

Shane Orender, senior, Osage City:

In the shadow of Fort and Boss to a degree, the 5-foot-10 Orender provides ball handling, athleticism, leadership, and a dangerous outside touch. Connecting on multiple 3-pointers in nearly every game, Orender has several games of at least 12 points already this season.
