Earlier this week, we hosted a poll on the Prep Hoops asking for the top point guard in New York. The response from the New York basketball fans was absolutely tremendous. After a very tight race featuring a lot of back and forth, [player_tooltip player_id="945521" first="Jayson" last="Mcghee"] of New Rochelle took the lead and finally held on. Check out the tweet below! Here, we take a look at and provide some analysis for the players who were in the running for top NY Point Guard.

Honorable Mentions

[player_tooltip player_id="787655" first="Jayden" last="Pierre"] | Long Island Lutheran

[player_tooltip player_id="787655" first="Jayden" last="Pierre"] has been an offensive masterpiece so far in his high school career. Pierre can drive and get athletic to the rim, making defenders miss with smooth dribble finishes. His shot spaces out the offense even more and allows bigs to work the paint, and he as a collegiate level stepback that can get defenders to bite on a jumper, or an easy long ball for Pierre. Speaking of collegiate, Pierre has found success there, earning a host of offers, most recently from Rhode Island and St. Peter’s.

[player_tooltip player_id="1045796" first="Jayden" last="Reid"] | Long Island Lutheran

Yes, two point guards from the same school. [player_tooltip player_id="787655" first="Jayden" last="Pierre"] and [player_tooltip player_id="1045796" first="Jayden" last="Reid"] make up a young, dynamic backcourt, and even after this pandemic year will have one year to play together. Reid has garnered D1 attention, specifically an offer from Stony Brook, and can play with speed to the paint and be dynamic under the basket. His playmaking is off the charts as well, with him being trustable to make the right pass for his team.

[player_tooltip player_id="945524" first="Sterling" last="Jones"] | Christ the King

In 2019, Christ the King met Long Island Lutheran in the state championship, with Christ the King being the CHSAA champion. Reid and Pierre are too young to have much of an impact or even be on the team back then, but [player_tooltip player_id="945524" first="Sterling" last="Jones"] did play a role on the Christ the King squad. Since then, Jones has only grew in skill, with him now confidently being able to be the floor general and lead the offense.

[player_tooltip player_id="773441" first="Jaquan" last="Carlos"] | Jefferson

Carlos has already been offered and committed to Hofstra in Queens, and for good reason. Carlos is an elite scorer, being able to light it up from deep and switch to moving the ball inside and attacking the paint. However, his main value is passing. Carlos is able to make impeccable passes that target the right player at the right spot, possibly being the best playmaker in NY and definitely one of the top in the country.

Runner-Up

[player_tooltip player_id="1047689" first="Todd" last="Rochelle"] | St. Francis

[player_tooltip player_id="1047689" first="Todd" last="Rochelle"] has been the typical superstar scorer. Rochelle can get the ball into the hoop in anyway possible, making him elite in the state. He is able to shoot both off the dribble and a step back move, as well as being deadly with his catch-and-shoot. Rochelle is a master of getting to the rim, with a filthy dribble and finishing and speed to get to the rim, or at least the line. His fastbreak game lets him take even more cracks at the rim.

Winner

[player_tooltip player_id="945521" first="Jayson" last="Mcghee"] | New Rochelle

[player_tooltip player_id="945521" first="Jayson" last="Mcghee"], by over 7 percentage points, won the best point guard in NY as voted by NY’s basketball fans, and there’s good reason why. On defense, McGhee is elite, being able to take on the opposing team’s star and keep up with them with footwork. If there is a turnover, McGhee can speed to the rim and quickly and efficiently cash in on a lack of defense on fastbreak. His shooting, playmaking, finishing, dribbling, IQ, and just about every other category are also at an elite level. In the coming weeks, expect McGhee to receive major college attention,
