Below is a list of standouts from the senior and junior class:
Unsigned Seniors:
Kasen Sparks Kasen Sparks 6'2" | SG Mayfield | 2021 State NM – SG 6’2 Mayfield
I have been watching Kasen for quite some time now. He has definitely been putting work in. He has shown that he can play both sides of the court very well and is an absolute dog on defense. His game has morphed to much more than just a shooter. He slashes to rack with ease and has developed a nice runner. I like the improvement he’s shown. If he continues he will be getting an offer very soon.
Areas of improvement: Kasen has become a much better all around player. He was a bit streaky with his shot throughout the Elite 100. For him it’s believing in himself and having confidence when he has the ball. He just needs to trust his ability and let the ball fly.
Ivan Bernal – SG 6’2 Alamogordo
Ivan Bernal was scheduled to play but never checked in.
Juniors
Jose Murillo Jose Murillo 6'8" | C Highland | 2022 State NM – C 6’8 – 6’9 Highland
Jose played great defense and was a strong postman. His length and athleticism allowed him to grab some crazy boards and get some big blocks. Jose managed to get a couple of steals in transition where he showed how versatile he was getting a fast break from the other side of the court and throwing it down. He is extremely long which allows him to play well underneath the rim. Jose shows a very high upside.
Areas of improvement: For Jose its simple he just needs to work on his free throw shooting to become the full package. Once he does this he is going to be an offensive threat.
Sean Johnson Sean Johnson 6'6" | SF Sandia | 2022 State NM – SF 6’5
Sean is a crazy bouncy wing who loves to attack the basket at all angles. His bounce allows him to throw it down whenever he needs to. I watched him dunk over defenders with ease. He has a nice frame and build and can defend well. He loves to play above the rim and manages to get a ton of rebounds. His mid range game is very efficient. A good passer I watched him throw a nasty behind the back pass.
Areas of improvement: Sean can get a little lazy on defense. I would like to see him use his motor to get up and down the court faster. Sean already is a D1 prospect but if he can do that one thing it will open up other areas of his game.
William Benjamin Jr. William Benjamin Jr. 6'0" | CG Las Cruces | 2022 State NM – PG 6’0 Las Cruces
Deuce is a fast point guard that can push the pace on both ends of the court. He has great speed to get to the basket and finish. He has a nice pull up and handles the ball well. Deuce is also a very good passer. He plays strong aggressive defense and has quick hands.
Areas of improvement: Deuce tends to turnover the ball at times from over dribbling. During the Elite 100 he was streaky with his 3 point shot and forced the ball. He has all of the tools and talent to be a successful productive player. They key for Deuce is to be more consistent.
Jakwon Hill Jakwon Hill 6'1" | CG Volcano Vista | 2022 State NM – SG 6’0 Volcano
A very good shooting guard who can create space very well. Has a good feel for the game and can play defense pretty well. I didn’t see too many 3 pointers from him. Most of his points were scored from mid range and slashing to the basket. He showed serious flashes of dominance at times. Jakwon has the skill set and IQ to be a college basketball player. The question becomes, at what level?
Areas of Improvement: I would love to see Jakwon really embrace being a shooter. He’s now seen the ball go in enough times, that he knows he’s capable of being effective from 3 point land. He simply has to trust himself and continue to shoot from outside more often. He also dribbled the ball way too much allowing the defense to collapse faster and caused him to turnover the ball. If he continues to improve his outside shooting and dribble the ball less, he’s going to catch the eye of the right program.
