Like always Region 5 does not rebuild, it reloads with skilled and talented players. The first games of the season can be played on December 14th. Look out for a compelling and competitive year of hoops in Region 5!
Alphabetically, here are our players to watch in Region 5:
AJ Ketterling (2021) |6-2 G| Central McLean – Quick and strong backcourt player who is solid on the defensive end. He is a great athlete who can shoot the jumper and slash to the paint. AJ is lethal in the pick-and-roll game. Expect him to have a great year leading this first-year co-op of Underwood, Turtle Lake, Mercer, and McClusky. Look for AJ to be an All-Region player and to have his team running on all cylinders late in the year.
Carter Englund Carter Englund 6'7" | PF Shiloh Christian | 2022 State ND (2022) |6-6 F| Shiloh Christian – He will be one of the best rebounders in the area. Expect him to score a ton of points off put-backs. Carter is a legitimate shot blocker and he will alter many shots this year. Expect his scoring numbers to increase mightily in 2020-2021. Look for him to have a dynamite season and become a top-end forward in Region 5.
Connor Kerzman (2023) |6-1 G| Garrison – A player who can score in bunches. He has a quick release and will let it fly from deep. Connor can also put it on the floor and get down-hill. Scoring from all over the court makes him a truly tough matchup. He moves well without the ball which puts him in position for open looks. Expect a bigger stronger athlete this season. Look for him to be one of the top young scoring guards in the Region.
Derin Sailer (2022) |5-10 G| Center/Stanton – Hard working young guard who will be looked at as a leader. He is a nice athlete with room to grow. Derin can bounce the rock and get two feet in the paint. He can finish creatively around the rim. Expect his shooting to improve and be a scary matchup come March. Look for Derin to be one of the top up-and-coming underclassmen in Region 5.
Gunnar Jacobs (2021) |6-3 G| Central McLean – Versatile player who can run the show at PG and play off the ball on the wing. He has a great understanding of the game with a high basketball IQ. Gunnar does the little things right and makes his teammates better with his dishing ability. He is an exceptional shooter that will put up big points for the Cougars. Look for him to be one of the top all-around guards in Region-5 this season.
Jace Friesz (2022) |6-3 F| Flasher – A Leader who does the little things right. He is a hard worker and very coachable. He makes others around him better and is unselfish. Jace can score from in the paint or on the perimeter. Expect a tremendous year from Jace; as he gets it done on offense, defense, rebounding, and in transition. He is a sneaky good shot-blocker around the rim. Look for him to have a break-out year and be selected as an All-Region player.
Jack Bright (2021) |6-5 F| Garrison – Long athletic player who blocks shots at will. His long wingspan allows him to alter shots and protect the rim. He has the hopping ability to throw it down in transition. Jack has a smooth and fluid left-handed shot from beyond the arc. He has the potential to be a walking double-double this season. Look for him to be in the running for Region-5 Senior Athlete of the year.
Logan Becker (2021) |6-3 F| New Salem/Almont – A key cog in the huge frontcourt for the Holsteins. He is a monster on the glass and in the paint. Logan has good feet and soft hands. He can be a bully on the block. His broad shoulders and strength make him a difficult matchup. Look for him to be a beast in the paint this season and lead his team on a charge come playoff time.
Tucker Schiele (2021) |6-0 G| Wilton/Wing – A good athlete who will improve his scoring this year. He is a hard-nosed gritty player. Tucker can knock down the 3-ball. He is a lock-down on-ball defender who will also get in passing lanes off the ball. Expect him to pile up the steals this year. Look for him to be one of the elite defenders in Region 5 this season.
Weston Kuhn (2022) |6-5 F| New Salem/Almont – A true double double machine. The second member of the huge frontcourt for the Holsteins. He has a soft touch around the basket. Weston can step out and hit triples. He has a nice-looking effortless stroke from deep. Look for him to be an All-Region player and propel his team into the late rounds of the Region tournament.
