After watching and reading about games from the eastern side of the state, it looks like there is a lot of talent spread across the state of Idaho and I am sure we will see a number of teams repping the east side at the state tournament this season. There have already been a lot of close games with great competition and I think the 2020-21 season is shaping up to have lots of excellent games in the future. Continue reading for a look at a couple of great games that were played in week 1 of the basketball season in eastern Idaho.
Jerome vs. Gooding: The Jerome Tigers began their season playing the Gooding Senators in a great battle with lots of scoring and some great defense being played on both sides. The Tigers ended up snagging a victory by 18 points, though the score was much closer for the majority of the game. Jerome used a balanced attack to help defeat the Senators thanks to a 22 point performance from class of 2023 member, Scott Cook, Michael Lloyd had 16 points, and the final Tiger in double figures was Schuyler Mower with 11 points. On the other side of the ball, Gooding put up a solid fight but struggled to score toward the end of the game as fatigue crept in. The Senators were led by Colston Loveland scoring 16 points and Owen Rogers contributing 10 points.
Pocatello vs. Canyon Ridge: In one of the closest games so far this season, The Pocatello Indians and Canyon Ridge Riverhawks needed an overtime period to determine a winner. The visiting Indians were able to steal a 3 point victory on the road after battling behind from a halftime deficit. A lot of clutch players emerged from both teams as the game stayed close the whole way. For the Riverhawks, a balanced attack nearly brought them a victory being led by Samuel Lupumba contributing 19 points, Ryker Holtzen adding 14 points, and Aaron Seitz rounding out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.
