After watching nearly 50 teams and more than 100 games in the span of three days, here are my choices as “1st Team All-Season Premiere” selections among the eighth-grade (Class of 20205) scoring guards in attendance…
Jeremiah Green | Dallas, TX | Class of 2025
At nearly 6-foot-3, Green brings enormous versatility to the ProSkills (TX) backcourt, and flashed excellent potential on both sides of the ball. The athletic guard had one of the quickest first steps of any player in attendance at Coast2Coast Preps “Season Premiere” tournament and when engaged, he used his speed, explosiveness, and instincts to smother opponents defensively. The Texas native was patient in his approach and efficiently chose his opportunities to attack the lane in the halfcourt. His physical tools make him very effective in transition and perimeter jumper improves, he grades as one of the better combo guards in the Class of 2025.
Hudson Greer | Austin, TX | Class of 2025
Greer was certainly a breakout performer in my eyes at the Coast2Coast Preps “Season Premiere” event. A 6-foot-4 prospect with ball-handling ability and playmaking feel in the halfcourt, the wiry wing can play both guard and forward positions at this stage in his development, and is a fluid athlete with outstanding pace to his game. Greer understands how and when to facilitate and would benefit by being more aggressive with his touches offensively. His lateral quickness should be monitored for further improvement but he’s a capable shooter off the catch with an ample wingspan.
John “Trey” McKenney III | Flint, MI | Class of 2025
McKenney was another revelation for me at the Coast2Coast Preps “Season Premiere” tournament due to his ability to influence the action and tempo of the game without dominating the ball. Playing in a “guest” role with H.H.B.C. – Black (TX), the Michigan resident was perhaps the most versatile offensive player in attendance. A capable ball-handler, McKenney operated with relative ease in the halfcourt, knocking down contested jumpers, and finding ways to attack the rim from the perimeter. His most underappreciated talents were certainly his vision and passing ability as the 6-foot-4 wing consistently made plays for others.
Jaden Nickens | Oklahoma City, OK | Class of 2025
Now standing 6-foot-3, Nickens has sprouted a few inches this year, and continued to punish opponents by utilizing his strong frame to attack the lane at the Coast2Coast Preps “Season Premiere” event. His “Team Most Hated” squad has proven their willingness to play anyone at any time and Nickens is the alpha of the group. His team’s slogan is “2H2G” and Nickens was indeed, “too hard to guard” for many defenders on this particular weekend. At his best when playing the role of an aggressive scorer, Nickens draws fouls at a remarkable rate, and is capable of jumpstarting scoring runs when he gets in rhythm from the perimeter.
Meleek Thomas | Pittsburgh, PA | Class of 2025
Thomas continues to be as impactful of a scorer as you can find on the national level among the current class of eighth-graders. The 6-foot-2 backcourt prospect is thin but has an element of tenacity to his game beyond his years. His offensive arsenal off the bounce is extremely advanced for his age and his charismatic personality makes him a natural leader no matter the jersey he is wearing. In what is becoming a regular occurrence, Thomas once again helped lead his team to a championship appearance, this time the H.H.B.C. – Black (TX) squad as a roster “guest” at the Coast2Coast Preps “Season Premiere”.
