Varsity Newcomers: Top PG Prospects
In this article:
One aspect that some people don’t understand is just because you didn’t play at all or just a little on varsity as a freshman or even sophomore doesn’t devalue you at all as a prospect. In some cases there are just a ton of talented upperclassmen in front of them. So many things can factor into this. Here we dive into a group of top prospects at each position that have not played varsity or maybe just a couple games. Check out our Varsity Newcomers: Top PG Prospects!
Tavari Johnson Tavari Johnson (Lyons – 2022)
Johnson broke out in a big was this summer for Young & Reckless. The lead guard has an advanced feel for running ball screen offense as a scorer and distributor. Was behind several senior guards, but now it will be his show at Lyons. The high IQ point guard without question looks like a D1 guy.

(Kenwood – 2023)
Ames is the headliner among the 2023 guards on this list. He was behind two nationally ranked point guards in Adam Miller Adam Miller and Marcus Watson Marcus Watson so he barely played at all on varsity, but is already considered a high-major recruit with the way he fills it up from all three levels. Dynamic playmaker!
Ahmad Henderson Ahmad Henderson (Brother Rice – 2023)
Henderson is a shifty lead guard that with the Illinois Hoopstars proved to be an excellent bucket getter. His jump shot is his forte and he will be a mainstay for the Brother Rice program from here on out.
Maurice Thomas (DePaul Prep – 2023)
Thomas had quite a few guards ahead of him, but he was a star for the non-varsity teams at DePaul Prep. Also had a strong outing at the Pangos Camp where he displayed good passing feel.

(Whitney Young – 2023)
Pigram is a good size point guard that crashes the glass and rebounds very well. Should see reserve minutes this year on a loaded Dolphins team.
Mekhi Cooper Mekhi Cooper (Bolingbrook – 2023)
Bolingbrook always produces quality guard play. We look for this guard to step up in a major way as a sophomore for the Raiders.
