Over in North Lauderdale, I took in night one of the Sunshine State Preseason Classic.

Here is a quick rundown of the scores from Wednesday night. Chaminade-Madonna was replaced by Somerset Prep against Westminster Academy due to Covid-19 issues.

I would like to add Marcus McGee puts on a great event and takes extra precaution in the midst of a pandemic. Great job, Marcus.

Calusa Prep Colts 66, Sagemont Lions 49

Mater Lakes 72, Somerset Academy (Pines) 59

Westminster Academy 67, Somerset Prep 53

Top Performers: (Part Two)

[player_tooltip player_id="829495" first="Kareem" last="Barnett"] - Mater Lakes

2022 combo guard [player_tooltip player_id="829495" first="Kareem" last="Barnett"] is like a bullet train running the floor in transition. The 6-foot-3 Barnett raced past Somerset Academy on numerous occasions for buckets at the rim. Moreover, his quickness along the baseline provided him with points as well. Barnett finished with a game-high 26 points and has another step in elevation over other players. I would not be surprised if he throws down a dunk like this in the near future. He pretty much already did last night without the defender in front of him. Barnett has that type of explosiveness.

[player_tooltip player_id="814903" first="Ben" last="Middlebrooks"] - Westminster Academy

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="814903" first="Ben" last="Middlebrooks"] overmatched Somerset Prep on the perimeter and in the paint all night. The Hurricanes simply had nobody big enough to match-up with the 6-foot-10 power forward. Middlebrooks finished with a game-high 30 points and knocked down a pair of 3-pointers. He also finished with at least ten rebounds thanks to his overwhelming size advantage in the paint. An underlying factor I like to his game is his floor IQ and ability to make a pass. He hooked up with 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="546221" first="Aidan" last="Abell"] for one dime underneath the basket. Middlebrooks received an offer from Georgia just last week. Dayton, Notre Dame, Clemson, Maryland, LSU, Iowa State, Florida, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech are also vying for his commitment.

[player_tooltip player_id="818660" first="Jonathan" last="Renois"] - Somerset Academy (Pines)

2021 guard [player_tooltip player_id="818660" first="Jonathan" last="Renois"] might have been the surprise of the night. The 6-foot Panther captain finished as the leading scorer on day one with 32 points. I say surprise because I believe he was hurt last season so I did not get to see him play. Either way, Renois put on a great first impression against Mater Lakes. On one play, Renois hit a long floater and drew contact for a foul. I thought his shot was highly efficient and he showed athleticism at the rim. Renois should be happy about his individual performance.

[player_tooltip player_id="953077" first="Raphael" last="Houssou"] - Sagemont

2021 [player_tooltip player_id="953077" first="Raphael" last="Houssou"] drew a tough assignment guarding 2021 [player_tooltip player_id="818672" first="Arturo" last="Dean"] in game one. The 6-foot-1 point guard had his hands full, but I thought he battled the whole game like a senior should. Houssou finished with a team-high 15 points and hit a pair of 3-pointers. One of those trifectas came from very deep near the scorers table. Houssou and the Lions can takeaway a lot from facing a team like Calusa Prep. I think that type of ball pressure and backcourt talent will prepare them moving forward. The Lions will continue to gel as the season moves along.

[player_tooltip player_id="818740" first="Jaylin" last="Bain"] - Calusa Prep

2021 [player_tooltip player_id="818740" first="Jaylin" last="Bain"] was a huge factor in the Colts win over the Lions. The Fort Lauderdale transfer finished with 14 points and hit a pair of 3-pointers. On a tweet I posted yesterday, Bain shifted his way into the paint for a nifty lay-up. Overall, I thought his handle was pretty tight and he had the athletic edge in the backcourt. Look for Bain and Dean to have that advantage a lot this season against their opponents.
