Christian Brothers got the 76-54 home win Saturday night against Bartlett.

Here are the quick hits from the Purple Wave’s win.

Christian Brothers has depth.

Head coach Bubba Luckett played 11 guys, nine of which are seniors, Saturday night, a different outlook the program hasn’t had in a while. The Purple Wave’s best players, Chandler Jackson and Reese McMullen, were able to get proper rest and stay fresh. Junior guard Zion Owens came off the bench and scored nine points. Bryce Dailey had five points. Colin Scrifes added four points. Scoring like this will be vital later in the season when the postseason starts.

[player_tooltip player_id="775593" first="Harrison" last="Kelly"] was huge for Christian Brothers in the second half.

The senior guard stepped up when the Purple Wave’s double-digit was gradually fading away. The Panthers were down 37-19 at the half before getting their deficit down to 43-35 midway through the third quarter, thanks to their aggressive defense leading to turnovers, which resulted in scores. Kelly made three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point shot attempt then made two 3s late in the third quarter to push Christian Brothers’ lead to 54-41. He made his third 3 of the night at the start of the final quarter, giving the Purple Wave a commanding 58-42 lead.

Kelly didn’t miss a shot Saturday. He was a perfect 3 for 3 from the field. If it wasn’t for Kelly’s scoring surge, the outcome might have been different.

McMullen led the team with 17 points and four assists. Jackson had 15 points, six rebounds and four assists. Senior point guard Eli Federman added eight points and eight rebounds.

Bartlett needs some offensive firepower.

At the moment, the Panthers don’t have a guard that can score on every possession. Bartlett is 1 for 23 from 3-point range in its first two games of the season. Its best shooter, guard Kam Jones, is 0 for 9 from deep thus far. Once junior guard Amarr Knox, transfer from Memphis Central High School, is cleared next week, he will instantly help Bartlett’s offense. Knox will be the team’s best player and should lead the team in scoring. Add in sophomore guard Regale Moore, the Panthers will have two players that are capable of providing much-needed scoring.

Senior Calvin Jennings led Bartlett with 17 points Saturday night. Senior point guard Will Farris added 12.

Weeks from now, Bartlett might look different offensively.
