Last season, Shurtliff played a big role for West Side as a major contributor of points, three-point shooting, and minutes played. In the upcoming season, Bryler will look to help lead the Pirates to a run at their district title and the hopes of a berth to the state tournament in March. Continue reading for a breakdown of Bryler’s skills and abilities on both sides of the ball ahead of the 2020-21 season.
Defense: Bryler is a solid defender for West Side. He usually plays at the top of West Side’s 3/4 court press and mainly guards opposing ball handlers in this press. He pressures the ball well and makes great judgments on the angles he needs to take to cutoff the ball handler in their traps. Once in the half court setting, Bryler ends up guarding a lot of opposing bigs and does a great job of using physicality to push them away from the block. He jumps well and times his jumps very effectively to grab some extra blocks and steals in the paint. No matter who he guards, Shurtliff plays hard and guards to the best of his ability in the circumstance. He is an underrated rebounder and he chases every miss on offense and defense.
Offense: Bryler has a great feel for the offensive game. He is one of the best shooters in the state at any level and he routinely knocks down at least a couple of triples per game. He is always ready to shoot and he shoots with confidence no matter who is guarding him. He has a high release that he uses to shoot over smaller defenders, and he can extend his range to shoot over longer defenders. If he doesn’t shoot the long ball, Shurtliff can drive to the rim and finish with either hand or he can shoot the mid-range jumper with ease. As a passer, Bryler has great court vision and he loves to kick the ball ahead to his open teammates after grabbing a rebound in order to start the fast break.
Overall: All things considered, Bryler is a great player for the West Side Pirates. On defense, he can guard all positions and does so with lots of ball pressure and physicality. On offense, he shoots the ball really well from downtown and has few gaps in his game. Bryler could transition to an excellent 3-guard at the next level.
