Friday brought us a top 30 match up (RCS Sports Weekly Team Rankings) with Westfield (26) hosting Concordia Lutheran (12.) Westfield thought that they would have to enter tonight’s game without their 3 year letterman point guard, [player_tooltip player_id="959062" first="Jadyn" last="Chaney"], however he was cleared by doctors to play after a consultation about an injury yesterday. So the table was set as Coach Goffney, [player_tooltip player_id="958619" first="Willie" last="Williams"] and a cast of guards were ready to take on Concordia Lutheran. The Crusaders entered the season loaded with talent after acquiring [player_tooltip player_id="887047" first="Griffin" last="Datcher"] IV, who transferred schools and teamed up with [player_tooltip player_id="1052158" first="Trey" last="Miller"], RJ Keene (Boise State commit), and the rest of the Crusaders over the summer. It doesn’t matter who plays this team, a win against them will be hard to come by this year. Here’s the game recap.

First Quarter

The point guard match up wasn’t as expected after [player_tooltip player_id="1052158" first="Trey" last="Miller"] picked up two early fouls. On the other end, [player_tooltip player_id="959062" first="Jadyn" last="Chaney"] leaned on his teammates as he knocked the rust off (coming off an injury.) Westfield received a huge contribution from Blake Washington who made three 3-pointers and scored 13 points overall in the first period. Herbert Harris added two 3-pointers himself as Westfield held an early lead. Trey McClure scored 8 points in the period to pace Concordia Lutheran and keep them in the game.

Second Quarter

Westfield’s defense was the key to the 2nd quarter, holding Concordia Lutheran to only 15 points. With [player_tooltip player_id="1052158" first="Trey" last="Miller"] on the bench due to foul trouble, the offense for the Crusaders did not look as smooth and shots were just not falling for the them as Herbert Harris continued his scoring onslaught by adding 9 points to his total and increasing the lead for the Mustangs. Westfield held a 53-36 lead heading to the break

Third Quarter

Concordia Lutheran opened the second half with a purpose. They found some success, offensively, by going to a high pick and roll with [player_tooltip player_id="1052158" first="Trey" last="Miller"] and RJ Keene. Add that to the issues Westfield had with protecting the ball, and Concordia Lutheran soon found themselves right back in the game. They were down by single digits with four minutes left in the period when the size and strength of [player_tooltip player_id="958619" first="Willie" last="Williams"] began to take its toll. He did a great job of creating space in the paint for the guards to drive, he crashed the boards and finished the quarter scoring 9 points. Westfield was able to spread their margin and ended the quarter with a 16 point advantage.

Forth Quarter

Westfield looked to be in cruise control as [player_tooltip player_id="959062" first="Jadyn" last="Chaney"] was able to keep pressure on the defense and attack the paint. The Mustangs were able to maintain the lead in the beginning of the 4th quarter. But Concordia Lutheran found themselves right back in the game as Shane Brennan knocked down three 3-pointers and RJ Keene added two more three pointers. The Crusaders clawed all the way back to take a one point lead with less than 2 minutes left before [player_tooltip player_id="833334" first="Jordan" last="Williams"] answered for Westfield with an "And-One" jumper followed by another jumper on consecutive possessions. Late free throws by [player_tooltip player_id="1052158" first="Trey" last="Miller"] put Concordia Lutheran up with less than 40 seconds left, but that was short lived as Chris Tyler and Ja’Dyn Chaney knocked down clutch free throws to seal the game for the Mustangs.

Final Score

Westfield - 86
