Today, we take a look at the guards across the state who are able to play both on and off the basketball. The term "combo guard" used to have a negative connotation to it, but now the way the game has evolved it has become common to have multiple ball handlers and shooters on the floor, making the combo guard very valuable now. We take a look at part two of the top CGs in VA, with a look at seven of them here.

[player_tooltip player_id="798739" first="Cam" last="Cormany"] | 6’0” | Radford

Cormany, the son of Radford Head Coach Rick Cormany who is an absolute legend out that way, plays exactly like you’d expect a coach’s son to play. Cormany is smart, tough and very skilled, and he’s able to score a lot of points without taking bad shots or shooting his team out of games. He’s one of the top shooters in the state and is extremely consistent from deep, and he’s underrated as a guy who can create for himself and others off the bounce.

[player_tooltip player_id="798723" first="Jamonte" last="Smith"] | 6’0” | Patrick Henry

Smith has been one of the top scorers in the Roanoke area over the past few years and was a big reason Patrick Henry was one win away from a state championship appearance. The 6’0” combo is extremely smooth and is a guy who can score it from all over off the bounce. He’s a good athlete who can play above the rim, he scores it from all three levels with consistency and he has the ability to take over games when his team needs him to.

[player_tooltip player_id="798737" first="Jaylen" last="Leftwich"] | 6’4” | Liberty Christian Academy

Leftwich is arguably the best recruit in the Lynchburg area in the 2021 class and has been out of this world over the course of the last year or so. He’s a big guard that’s strong with the ball, can see over top and make plays for others and he’s great in transition where he can get downhill and use his size and athleticism to finish at the rim. He’s a guy who brings it every game and finds different ways to impact his team in a winning fashion.

[player_tooltip player_id="798738" first="Bobby" last="Johnson"] | 6’0” | Western Branch

Part of a trio of combo guards at Western Branch, Johnson is the type of guy you love to play with and hate to play against. He’s a high motor guard who gets in your face defensively and doesn’t let up all game, and he’s a guy who scores in bunches and attacks you over and over again. He’s quick off the bounce, shoots it well from deep and sets the tone on both ends for his team.

[player_tooltip player_id="798752" first="Jonas" last="Sanker"] | 6’2” | Covenant School

Sanker is a two sport star at Covenant School and holds all sorts of offers for football, but last year he really stepped up as a big time basketball player, helping Covenant to the VISAA D3 semifinals. Sanker is the type of guy who you walk by on the street and say “he’s probably a really good athlete” because he has a strong build and a long frame, and he absolutely is a terrific athlete. He’s a guy who thrives in ball screen situations and in transition where he can get to the rim and finish above it, and he’s a guy who will attack you over and over again throughout the course of the game.

Kamari Braswell | 6’0” | Catholic

There aren’t many guards in the 757 that get overlooked the way Braswell does, as he was one of the top sixth men in the area last year before he got hurt. The 6’0” combo is instant offense when he comes in the game as he has blazing speed in transition, a quick first step off the bounce and he comes at you over and over again when he gets it going. He’s a guy who can make tough shots from all over and is a solid defender as well.

[player_tooltip player_id="798714" first="Jacobi" last="Lambert"] | 6’0” | Heritage-Lynchburg

Lambert is one of the best pure scorers in the Lynchburg area and he has a ton in his bag when he’s let loose and able to go. The 6’0” stocky guard is strong around the rim and a good rebounder for his size, he’s a guy who can score from all three levels and he can create space and make shots off the bounce. He’s a guy who can fill it up quickly and can put up big numbers on a nightly basis.
