Last season, Jack emerged as one of the best players from the class of 2022 in the state of Idaho and he contributed big minutes and lots of points for the Boise Brave. In the upcoming season, Payne will look to help lead Boise to a district title and a run at the state championships. Continue reading for a breakdown of Jack’s skills and abilities on both ends of the floor.
Defense: Payne is a great defender for the Brave and he is willing to guard any player that he matches up with. At 6’5″, he can guard 1-5 and has the build to stick with point guards and use physicality with the bigs. Against guards, Payne has good lateral agility and he always keeps his man in front. He uses his long arms to contest every shot without giving up an easy driving lane or closing out too aggressively. Against bigs, Payne is physical and matches up well with opposing players in reference to his overall size. He is quicker than most post players and he can catch them off guard or make them pick up their dribble before they can get into a rhythm. As a rebounder, Payne is always located in the paint when a shot goes up and he is always crashing the glass and looking for boards.
Offense: Jack is a stand-out offensive player for Boise and he will continue to sharpen his skills in the next two seasons. He is a threat from anywhere on the court and plays the offensive game with confidence. From outside, he can knock down a shot from the perimeter with ease and has extended range to knock down long jumpers. He can also drive all the way to the rim where he finishes with a lot of athleticism and is skilled with both hands. He is also capable of a mid-range pull-up jumper that he shoots sparingly. Jack is one of the most gifted passers in the league and he throws a lot of great outlet passes, reminiscent of the great Kevin Love. In the open floor, he is a solid ball handler and can command the offense in transition.
Overall: Altogether, Payne is an exceptional talent that will be a great player for the Brave. On defense, he can guard anyone on the court and makes great reads. On offense, he is a gifted scorer and willing passer. Payne would make a great 2,3, or 4 at the next level.
