Last season, Arie was a big contributor for the Sandpoint Bulldogs and will look to help the squad again this year as they make a run at their district championship and the hopes of a selection to the state tournament. Continue reading for a breakdown of Arie’s game on both ends of the floor coming into the 2020-21 season.
Defense: Arie is a solid defender and will continue to get better with age and strength. Entering his sophomore season, Arie is tall for his age and will look to add strength to make himself an even better defender. In the present, VanDenBerg has strong hands that he uses to poke the ball away from weak ball handlers. Sandpoint likes to run a 3/4 press and Arie constantly comes up with steals due to pressuring the ball. Against post players, Arie does not back down, but struggles due to their size. As he gets older, he will be able to match up with any player on the court well and will have a physical presence when he plays. Arie plays solid help side defense and has great instincts for where the ball will end up next.
Offense: VanDenBerg is a great offensive option for the Bulldogs. Arie plays like an upperclassmen and has confidence to spare. His game revolves around his ability to shoot the ball from way beyond the arc and he routinely knocks down more than one or two triples in a game. If he does not shoot the ball, Arie finishes well around the rim and likes to attack the rim to draw contact and the opportunity to shoot free throws. With his youth, Arie is still figuring out how to become a consistent scorer and he has games where he scores in bunches, and games where he rarely shoots. With age will come the art of consistency and he will be a great scorer by the time he graduates. Arie is a good passer and uses his court vision during fast breaks to find the open man for an easy basket.
Overall: Altogether, Arie is a really solid basketball player who will only get better with age. On defense, he is not afraid to guard any player and will get better with more size and strength. On offense, VanDenBerg is a threat from downtown and his skills will also develop as he becomes more comfortable with his role on the team. Watch for Arie in the coming years as he develops into a great basketball talent.
