This expo gave several players the opportunity to showcase their skill set and also give viewers a chance to see the next wave of talent on the rise. Here are a few Houston and Corpus Christi prospects that stood out most amongst the rest of the pack at the Top 250 Expo that you should keep eyes on from here on out.
Ethan Satery-Miranda – 5’5 – Point Guard – London High School – 2023
Ethan may have been the shortest prospect in attendance but his intense style of play and impact in each game stood out in a major way. Defensively, he was very disciplined, Miranda stayed low and got into the chest of his opponent, he also showed a good instinct for when to gamble for on-ball steals or when to jump the passing lanes. On the offensive side of the ball, Ethan made the most out of every scoring opportunity he was given, getting layups from timely cuts to the basket and hitting his open three-point shots where he was near automatic from the corners. This point guard did an excellent job of playing off the ball, constantly finding a way to get open from beyond the arc. Miranda showed a great feel for the game, he moved around the court so well, always looking for an opening, and quickly learning his teammates’ tendencies, and knowing exactly where to be in order to be a difference-maker. He excelled most when pushing the tempo and looking for a chance to score early in the offense. Miranda showed the ability to create his own shot using his tight handles, he broke a few ankles out there with his quick crossover dribbles, through the legs dribble, and behind the back moves. He hit jumpers off the dribble efficiently, particularly in transition where Ethan was able to beat the defense to a spot, stop on a dime, and get his shot up. Ethan Miranda displayed pure point guard abilities at times, he consistently looked to set up teammates when he brought the ball up court, he distributed the ball well, especially on the dribble drive. The young man is a true competitor, he didn’t let his height affect his game or his impact on the floor one bit.
Alijah Miranda – 5’8 – Point Guard – London High School – 2024
Alijah Miranda was one of the smallest players in the building but he still found a way to be impactful. He was a catch-and-shoot specialist, his respectable shooting prowess kept the defenses honest. Alijah showed and proved that he is not a player that you want to leave unaccounted for, he knocked down open spot-up jumpers at a high rate from different spots on the floor. Good form, nice rotation, and release on his jumper. Alijah Miranda is a freshman with a raw skill set, he has a solid upside if he continues to put the work in.
Layne Labertew – 6’2 – Shooting Guard – Caldwell High School – 2022
Layne is a fundamentally sound prospect that has the basics of the game down pat, he also showed good mechanics and techniques to go along with his solid scoring instincts. Labertew was comfortable handling the ball on the perimeter and attacking off the dribble, he showed that he was capable of making simple moves off the bounce look extremely effective. Layne wasn’t the most athletic player but he knew how to get his own shot off cleanly most of the time. When he got to his spots he displayed a nice soft touch on his floaters and jumpers in the mid-range. Layne Labertew played with a good feel for the game, he had the intangibles to effect change on the court both offensive and defensively, he contributed across the board and gave a good effort.
Justin Anaemejeh – 6’2 – Shooting Guard/Small Forward – Cinco Ranch – 2021
Justin made getting buckets look easy, he got to the basket whenever he wanted to and finished more times than not. This strong body kid looked to dominate his opponents on every possession with his size, he handled physicality extremely well, able to use his great body strength to overpower other guards when penetrating the lane. Justin was at his best when scoring in the paint, whether it was posting up, getting putback layups, or drawing fouls. His ability to get physical and absorb contact is what set him apart from any other guards at the expo.
Praise Nwajiaku – 6’0 – Point Guard – Fort Bend Marshall – 2021
Praise is a dime dropping point guard that can make quick decisions on the fly. He played tough basketball, physicality didn’t throw him off at all, he still converted plays. He found ways to make a difference with his passing, defending, and rebounding, he did an outstanding job of competing on the boards amongst the tree down low. Praise Nwajiaku was a major piece for his team, doing just about everything out there, showing good potential as an all-around player.
