With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the top forwards in Region 3
Alex Huber Alex Huber 6'6" | SF Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier | 2021 State ND , Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier
Huber was the catalyst for an EKM team that won the region title last year, averaging 20 points and seven rebounds per game. He’s got all-state potential as a senior, as he’ll be even more heavily featured in the offense than he was last year. He’s a matchup nightmare for people because at 6-foot-5, he’s got a blend of quickness, strength, post skills and a motor that runs hot.
Scott Wagner Scott Wagner 6'8" | C Ellendale | 2022 State ND , Ellendale
Wagner has put up monster numbers since about the midway point of his freshman year and last year, he was an all-state guy, averaging 20 points and 12 rebounds. Don’t expect those go down any, as he’ll be the unquestioned go-to guy for the Cardinals every night. Not only is he skilled in the post, but his activity level and mobility allow him to manufacture points without needing a lot of shot attempts or drawn up touches. He’s going to see extra attention from everybody, but he’s good enough to put 20-25 points and 12-15 rebounds a game.
Ashton Biesterfeld, Oakes
Oakes may be the favorite in Region 3 next year and while a lot of the Tornadoes’ hype comes from their star guards, Biesterfeld is a valuable two-way interior presence. He’s strong and tough on the defensive end of the floor, using his leverage to contain a lot of good post players, and he’s an effective complementary scorer.
Jorgen Paulson, Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier
Paulson showed in a secondary role that he’s capable of producing big numbers in doses. He’s athletic, he’s skilled and he can impact the game in a variety of ways. Paulson can guard just about anybody and keys what should be an outstanding EKM defense. He’s a solid shooter and an excellent slasher. Expect his numbers to take off in a bigger role in his senior season.
Josh Moser Josh Moser 6'1" | SG Medina-Pingree-Buchanan | 2023 State ND , Medina/Pingree-Bunchanan
Moser’s been a bright spot for MPB and while he doesn’t have great height, he’s an athletic and active swingman who can put up numbers. He can get to the rim and make plays. He’s only a sophomore this year, but don’t be surprised if he’s one of the best players in the region.
Hudson Schmidtz, Carrington
Carrington was down last year, relying heavily on Seth Nelson Seth Nelson 6'3" | SG Carrington | 2020 State ND for just about everything as the only experienced varsity player. While the Cardinals took their lumps as a whole, Schmidtz was a definite bright spot in the frontcourt and emerged as a legitimate double-figure scorer. He’s active and athletic, and don’t be surprised if he’s a double-double type guy over the next few seasons.
