As things started to slowly open up in certain states there were a limited amount of teams and players who were invited to certain high level events. One of those events was the Phoenix Phall Phace-Off which hosted some of the best teams in the nation such as Arizona Select UAA, AZ Firestorm Adidas Gold, AZ Supreme Nike EYB, D1 New Mexico UAA, AZ Prime, The Show, PAL Elite, etc. This event was hosted September 18-20, 2020 in Phoenix, AZ. The Phoenix event had 15U-17U divisions with 4-5 teams in each division. I was able to view the New Mexico kids and team that were invited to compete in this elite event.
Here is a list of Sophmore Standouts:
Donovan Black Donovan Black 6'6" | PF Del Valle | 2023 State TX – Onate
Donovan is long and and super athletic. I watched Donovan chase rebound after rebound, offensively and defensively. He is difficult to guard underneath due to his length and aggressiveness. Most of his points are in the paint, in fact many are off offensive rebounds. Teams that tried to guard him from outside were unsuccessful. Donovan has a very quick first step and was able to maneuver through being guarded.
Gideon Harris Gideon Harris 6'2" | SF ABC Prep | 2023 State NM – Legacy
Gideon Harris Gideon Harris 6'2" | SF ABC Prep | 2023 State NM was fun to watch. He is a super fast point guard who shoots the ball well from the outside. He is a talented slasher and an aggressive heads up defender. Gideon had multiple steals throughout the tournament that led to fast break points.
Judah Cassaus – Del Norte
Judah is another tough guard who defends the ball well and is an absolute pest on his defender. He shoots the ball well from midrange and had a decent 3 point shot. He uses his handles and speed to get to the basket. Judah is a natural two player and thrives in a fast break situations. If you leave him open he can get to the basket very fast and get you with a floater which I saw on multiple games.
Here are some of the incoming Freshman standouts I watched:
Dylan Chavez- La Cueva (Eduprize)
A very talented sharp shooter who can get hot quickly. Dylan works very well on a high pick and roll. The teams that allowed the pick and roll to happen learned quickly not to leave Dylan Chavez open. He has a very nice range from the outside and has a very good 3 point shot. Dylan has a lethal runner and floater that he utilizes very well.
Marcus Wilson – Volcano
A natural athlete who can move up and down the court very well. A strong on ball defender with quick hands. Marcus is fast and and can get to the rim easily. Can shoot the ball decent from deep utilizing his 3 point shot. Another natural athlete who can change speeds easily. Wilson was very difficult to guard and has good ball control.
