Even during an era that is heavy on 3-point shooting, there are still some excellent players who thrive in the low-post area as back to the basket players. Here are few young low-post prospects to watch.
Luke Northweather Luke Northweather 6'9" | PF Blair Oaks | 2022 State MO 6’9″ Blair Oaks: This versatile 2022 Mid-Missouri standout has a overall versatile skill set, but his back to the basket game is as good as anybody in the state. He has great footwork and he makes great use of head and shoulder fakes and can score in a variety of ways in the post. He splits double-teams and has a nice touch around the basket. He is also an elite passing threat when the double-team comes at him. He is very unselfish and can facilitate offense. He helped lead Blair Oaks to a Class 3 Final Four berth last season.
Kortez Stevenson Kortez Stevenson 6'7" | PF Center | 2022 State MO 6’6″ Center: A robust 250-pound 2022 lefty forward who plays like a baby Zach Randolph with his combination of power and finesse around the basket. He can play bully ball with his strength, yet dance around defenders with his deft footwork and delicate shooting touch off the backboard. He will also step out and knock down a jumper, but he is fun to watch his multi-faceted low post game.
Aaron Ledgerwood 6’8″ Glendale: The 2022 post is an old-school back to the basket player with a big body and good fundamentals in the post. He is very good at establishing a good base to seal his defenders and he will power up with very effective drop steps. He catches the ball well in traffic and will pass the ball well out of double teams.
Ethan Wiley Ethan Wiley 6'5" | PF Battle | 2023 State MO 6’5″ Battle: A powerful 2023 post player who has a nice combination of strength and mobility in the paint. He is difficult to move when he establishes his position and he can finish well with drop steps and jump hooks. He is also a solid post defender who will block his share of shots. He is a rebounding machine who will get out of his area to grab boards.
Evens Appollon 6’9″ Father Tolton: A young 2023 back to the basket post who has improved by leaps and bounds over the past year. He has very good rebounding instincts, but he is learning how to use his size to score around the basket with improved footwork and the development of a jump hook. He has a pretty big upside as he continues to gain more experience.
