2022: Top 10 Point Guard Prospects (Summer Edition)

There’s a lot of talent in North Carolina when looking at things from a positional standpoint. Here’s a look at the Top 10 Point Guards in the 2022 North Carolina rankings.

6’1 [player_tooltip player_id="574456" first="Amare" last="Haynie"] | Winston-Salem Christian

Haynie is a crafty point guard prospect that will be a new face in the Winston-Salem Christian rotation after making waves with Moravian Prep in 2019-20. He uses his length and athleticism to get to the rim and make plays and has a knack for knocking down the 3-ball. He should turn a corner this season as a primary ballhandler in 2020-21. He holds offers from Winthrop, Wichita State, Old Dominion, VCU, East Carolina, Wake Forest, UNC-Wilmington, Ole Miss and UAB.

6’1 [player_tooltip player_id="848065" first="Khalil" last="Marshall"] | Word of God

Marshall has already been showcased for his ability to defend at a high level with consistency. As he learns to operate on offense with similar consistency, he’ll be a problem on both ends. He has top-notch handles that allow him to be aggressive off the dribble and operate on all three levels. He’ll have some more pieces to work with in the Word of God rotation as their primary ball handler. He holds an offer from Winthrop.

5’10 [player_tooltip player_id="848063" first="Cam" last="Oates"] | Trinity Christian

Oates is an emerging two-way point guard that showcased his prowess shooting the 3-ball and defending this past weekend at Big Shots Myrtle Beach Fall HoopFest. He has the ability to change the pace of the game with his ability to knock down shots on the perimeter and make plays for others. Defensively, he plays with strength and a high IQ for forcing turnovers. He’ll be a name to watch at Trinity Christian in Fayetteville.

6’1 [player_tooltip player_id="848062" first="Jaquantae" last="Harris"] | Northwood Temple

Harris is an emerging name at Northwood Temple due for a big boost in his recruitment after developing during the pandemic. He’s an explosive guard that shows off his athleticism by getting to the rim and blazing past defenders to get his teammates involved. After a successful sophomore campaign, he’ll look to show his consistency in 2020-21 entering his junior season. LSU, Tulsa, East Carolina, Iona, Wichita State, Hofstra and Florida International have all offered him.

6’0 [player_tooltip player_id="848075" first="Quava" last="Propst"] | Providence Day

Propst is a true floor general with a knack for controlling the pace on both ends using his quickness. He has nice vision in the open floor making him a threat regardless of if he scores or not. When he’s not looking for teammates, he’s using his speed to get by defenders and finish around the rim, something he can do in bunches. He holds an offer from Catawba with Mercer and Belmont recently showing interest.

6’2 [player_tooltip player_id="725186" first="Evan" last="Smith"] | Ardrey Kell

Smith is an emerging guard prospect that’s relentless at making things happen with the ball in his hands. He’s crafty off the bounce and loves getting to the paint and finishing in traffic but unselfish when operating at the point guard spot. With [player_tooltip player_id="577848" first="Elijah" last="Gray"] and [player_tooltip player_id="1028028" first="Peyton" last="Gerald"] to work with in the frontcourt, look for Smith’s stock to rise a ton at Ardrey Kell in 2020-21.

6’0 [player_tooltip player_id="574440" first="Mike" last="Best"] | Wayne Country Day

Best is an emerging floor general that’s learning how to be more than a scorer when he’s on the floor. He’s a quick guard that likes to get under defenders and create turnovers on one end while showing off his range and handles on the offensive end. After making it to the state title game this past season, he’s a name to watch in the Wayne Country Day backcourt alongside [player_tooltip player_id="533552" first="Jaden" last="Cooper"] and [player_tooltip player_id="1050009" first="Carlos" last="Raven"].

6’0 [player_tooltip player_id="577860" first="Zaharee" last="Maddox"] | Davie County

Maddox is a growing prospect that matured quickly in the Davie County backcourt, given he had to start and run the offense as a sophomore, but he embraced the role, filling up the stat sheet with 14 ppg, 5.3 apg and 4.9 rpg. As he learns to build on 2020-21, look for Davie County to turn a corner in the win-loss column. He holds offers from High Point, Penn State and DePaul.

6’4 [player_tooltip player_id="848091" first="Quante" last="Berry"] | Winston-Salem Christian

Berry is a new face in the HoopState after playing in Tennessee this past year where he was an all-state performer, averaging 16.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.6 steals per game at Bradley Central. He’s an electric point guard that will share the backcourt this season with [player_tooltip player_id="574456" first="Amare" last="Haynie"], which should make them a lethal combination. He holds offers from Auburn, Wichita State, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Florida and Texas A&M.

5’11 [player_tooltip player_id="577867" first="Jacob" last="Newman"] | Myers Park

Newman is a growing name in North Carolina’s 2022 class. He played a key role in the Myers Park rotation last season and made waves with his ability to score and distribute with ease at the point guard position. He’ll be a name to watch on a talented Myers Park roster in 2020-21.

Honorable Mention

5’8 [player_tooltip player_id="577880" first="Keondre" last="Rodgers"] | Hertford County

6’0 [player_tooltip player_id="848094" first="Marcus" last="Magness"] | West Charlotte

6’3 [player_tooltip player_id="577847" first="Nikolas" last="Graves"] | Greensboro Day School

6’0 [player_tooltip player_id="945077" first="Terry" last="Moore"] | Washington

6’1 [player_tooltip player_id="848081" first="Joe" last="Thompson"] | South Central
