Today on Prospect Talk we discuss what we see in Dodd and Blue.
Why Shooting Guard?
Alonzo Dodd Alonzo Dodd 6'2" | CG South St Paul | 2022 State MN – I’ve seen Alonzo play both shooting guard and point guard in the past twelve months but I went with the wing spot for him because he plays so much wing at South St. Paul, and Dodd is 6-foot-2. Yes he could be a lead guard but Alonzo does so much for a team near the rim or at the perimeter that I added him on the shooting guard list. This winter I think we will see him play more on the wing for SSP.
Kendall Blue Kendall Blue 6'6" | SG East Ridge | 2022 State #242 Nation MN – Like Dodd, I have seen Kendall play both spots. That said, with East Ridge, Kendall did more off the ball in key spots when I watched as Ben North Ben North 6'0" | PG East Ridge | 2021 State MN had the ball. And most recently which is likely more important, Kendall played some on the ball for D1 Minnesota but Sammy Presthus and a few others did more of the handling (Blue only played in a few events). Why not a three? At 6-foot-5 you could place Kendall at either spot but I have seen him guard a lot of twos so I went with shooting guard.
The Case for Kendall Blue Kendall Blue 6'6" | SG East Ridge | 2022 State #242 Nation MN
- Kendall has physical gifts of height, agility, and athleticism that many other players don’t as a guard. He’s got the length and lateral ability that schools want plus the versatility to maybe play at three different spots, another item that is intriguing to schools.
- Blue’s ceiling is the high major level and that is why Marquette has offered Kendall a scholarship (Wyoming, Western Illinois, and George Washington have offered).
- Kendall scored 14.3 points a game in his first season (his sophomore year) as a varsity starter. He also played as a reserve as a frosh.
The Case for Alonzo Dodd Alonzo Dodd 6'2" | CG South St Paul | 2022 State MN
- Dodd is one of the toughest, most productive, and most consistent players in his class. He can be depended on to defend, take the right shots, rebound, handle, move off the ball, and lead each and every time he takes the floor.
- Dodd averaged nearly 25 points and almost double figure rebounds as a sophomore leading South St. Paul to a winning record for the first time in who knows how long. He’s seen the winning and Alonzo has seen a program in it’s struggle when he scored 14 plus a game as a SSP frosh. Alonzo could of enrolled someplace else but he’s playing in his home area where his family has played. He’s a player that wants to make a name for himself in his own situation.
- Alonzo has offers from Milwaukee, Morgan State, and Western Illinois so far plus calls from a load of schools including a program like Cal.
The Decision
I went with Kendall as the top shooting guard prospect at this point because we are still in an area where potential is so big. A year from now it will be more about production after a 17u season and we will look at things closer. But right now Kendall is a 6-foot-5, 6-foot-6 versatile and athletic player so we gave him the slight edge. This is why Marquette has offered, but at the same time, I could see Alonzo Dodd Alonzo Dodd 6'2" | CG South St Paul | 2022 State MN getting a high major offer himself some day.
