After our series of articles on the Class of 2021 who should be valued, we now shift our attention to those in the Class of 2022 and those that need to be on the radar of college coaches.
We will continue to go through each conference to try and hit as many players as possible with the hopes of helping these juniors the attention of prospective college coaches.
Jayden Mackie Jayden Mackie 6'2" | PG Aplington-Parkersburg | 2022 State IA – Aplington-Parkersburg
An elite scorer as just a sophomore, Aplington-Parkersburg’ Jayden Mackie Jayden Mackie 6'2" | PG Aplington-Parkersburg | 2022 State IA finished the year with 316 points.
The Class of 2022 guard also added 54 assists, 50 rebounds, 19 steals and six blocks in 21 games. Mackie helped the Falcons to a 19-3 record before a tough loss in the postseason ended their run.
He shot almost 50 percent from the field, 35 percent from the three-point line and buried nearly 79 percent of his free throws.
Gunner Meyer Gunner Meyer 6'5" | SF Wapsie Valley | 2022 State IA – Wapsie Valley
The defending Class 1A state champions at Wapsie Valley have plenty of reason to think a repeat is at hand.
One of those is Class of 2022 prospect Gunner Meyer Gunner Meyer 6'5" | SF Wapsie Valley | 2022 State IA who returns after scoring 283 points with 105 rebounds, 32 steals, 30 assists and 19 blocks. The 6-foot-4 Meyer shot almost 52 percent from the floor and over 44 percent from deep, knocking down 40 three-pointers in all.
Brayden Sawyer Brayden Sawyer 5'10" | SG Grundy Center | 2022 State IA – Grundy Center
Paired up with Class of 2022 teammate Dexter Whitehill, Brayden Sawyer Brayden Sawyer 5'10" | SG Grundy Center | 2022 State IA gives Grundy Center an incredible opportunity on the court this year.
Sawyer scored 287 points to go along with 112 rebounds, 43 assists, 23 steals and five blocks. He helped the Spartans finish with the winning record in 2019-20, going 13-10 overall.
Sawyer sank a team-high 54 three-pointers, shooting 45 percent from the field and 42 percent from deep. He also drained 74 percent of his free throw attempts.
Daniel Stahl – AGWSR
For AGWSR to push its way up the North Iowa Cedar standings, they will need Class of 2022’s Daniel Stahl to have a big junior campaign.
Last year, Stahl was a role player, scoring 85 points with 52 rebounds, 12 steals and 11 assists. AGWSR graduates a handful of seniors, leaving holes to be filled.
Peyton Schmitz – Sumner-Fredericksburg
With the graduation of leading scorer James Stimson James Stimson 6'1" | SG Sumner-Fredericksburg | 2020 State IA , more of that burden will fall onto the shoulders of Peyton Schmitz at Sumner-Fredericksburg.
And the Class of 2022’s Schmitz proved last winter he is more than capable of carrying the load.
Schmitz scored 245 points with 87 rebounds, 56 assists, 45 steals and 35 made three-pointers for the Cougars. He is joined by a couple of seniors in the starting lineup this year.
