I expect almost all conference games to be highly competitive and down to the wire. Continue reading for my breakdown of the best players at the 4A level in eastern Idaho.
Kaden Hales, 2021: Hales has great mechanics and a quick release on his jumper allowing him to get shots off well before the defense can closeout. Pocatello will look to use Kaden this season to help them stretch the floor and open driving lanes with the hopes of easy buckets at the basket or kick-outs. Hales always has his feet set and his body adjusted to get his shot off as quickly as possible and it is not rare to see him hit multiple triples in a game. Watch for Kaden to light up a gym nearest you this season for the Pocatello Indians.
Jovan Sowell, 2021: Century will look to Sowell a lot this season for defensive intensity and the ability to run the show. Jovan is a great point guard who can get the offense into position and run a set while guarding the best player on the other end of the floor. He has a great motor and never seems to get tired whenever he steps onto the court. Sowell can also knockdown the open jumper and has proven his ability to finish at the rim on fast breaks. Century will look for Jovan’s guidance and energy this season to help push them as they enter into conference play and deep into the postseason.
Carson Johnson, 2021: As a shooting guard, Carson Johnson is a gifted scorer from all levels and has the ability to get hot in the blink of an eye. Johnson put up some incredible scoring games last season including a handful of 20 point performances, as well as 25, and 32 in the district tournament. Johnson has a deadly stroke as a lefty and is quick to let it fly whenever he senses any daylight. Bonneville will look to keep the ball in Carson’s hands this season as they implement sets to get him the ball to increase their chances of winning.
Cooper Kesler, 2022: The Hillcrest Knights are excited to use Cooper this season to help boost their shooting percentages. Kesler has a great looking jump shot with the ability to read the defense while coming off of screens. He can get his shot up in a hurry and has consistently shown his ability to knockdown any and all shot opportunities. Kesler has great footwork on the catch and wastes no energy in his transition from getting set for the shot, until he is ready to let it fly. As Hillcrest fights for a shot at the district title, I fully expect Cooper Kesler to be leading the way for the Knights during the 2020-21 season.
