The Scrimmage presented by Play Ball Nation was a one-day tournament that featured five North Texas teams made up of some of the top and more underrated talent in the metroplex. Games were played back to back with not much of a break in between, which made it easier to see which players could keep up a high level of play for an extended period of time. A lot of guys stood out, but here are more of the top performers that made major impacts for their teams.

Standout Player of the Day | [player_tooltip player_id="1020122" first="Javen" last="Hutton"] | PB Nation ’21

[player_tooltip player_id="1020122" first="Javen" last="Hutton"] was in his bag from the jump, crossing everybody over, and getting whatever shot he wanted, he showed that he could score on anybody guarding him. When it came to creating space and getting to his spots he did it with ease and often capitalized on it. While watching Hutton, you’ll notice that he’s an incredibly tough defender who frequently causes problems for opposing point guards by either forcing them to pick up their dribble, making them turnover the ball, or just simply causing them to throw a bad pass. [player_tooltip player_id="1020122" first="Javen" last="Hutton"] led his team with his ultra-competitive play, just by watching him you’ll see that the kid really hates to lose. He plays with a lot of heart and confidence in himself and he’s the type of teammate you don’t ever want to let down out there.

Defensive Player of the Day | [player_tooltip player_id="779907" first="Donta" last="Coady"] | PB Nation ’21

[player_tooltip player_id="779907" first="Donta" last="Coady"] proved to be the best wing defender on the court. Every player that came his way he locked down, and at times it looked like the offense would intentionally keep the ball from going to his side. There’s not a player or position on the court he can’t slow down, Coady picked up his man full court and was even willing to guard the opposing team’s best player each game. Anytime the momentum started to shift, [player_tooltip player_id="779907" first="Donta" last="Coady"] was on the court and making a difference all with his defense.

Co-Floor General of the Day | [player_tooltip player_id="887082" first="Kylin" last="Green"] | Team Nation ’21

Kylin kept his team in the game with his outstanding, relentless play. Green has no quit in him, he consistently attacked on offense and gave great effort on defense. He did a great job and getting to the rim and either scoring or getting to the foul line where he made them count, he had a very efficient night from the stripe. [player_tooltip player_id="887082" first="Kylin" last="Green"] also found his teammates that were open around the perimeter, he’s excellent at driving and kicking, how he sees and gets to the ball to these guys is beyond me.

Co-Floor General of the Day | Kai Jordan | PB Nation ’21

Kai Jordan’s floor general tendencies were on display all night. He impressed me with his ability to control the offense and the game speed. Jordan knew exactly when to push the pace and when to slow things down. He knows his role and doesn’t try to get out of character. A true point guard, always looked to pass first or to set up the offense, he showed a knack for finding the open man no matter where they were. Defensively, he got after it, guarded his man well, and played tough defense.

Best Ball-Handler | [player_tooltip player_id="959054" first="Elijah" last="Taylor"] | B.M.M. (Basketball Means More) ’21

[player_tooltip player_id="959054" first="Elijah" last="Taylor"] is a dribbling machine, he was a threat anytime the ball was in his hands due to his ability to make extremely quick decisions. Taylor made getting into the teeth of defense look very easy. His high-speed ball-handling consistently got him into the lane where he would usually look to set up teammates or get a quick bucket by trying to score or by dumping it off to his big man. [player_tooltip player_id="959054" first="Elijah" last="Taylor"] is has a very controlled handle, he may dribble a lot but he protects the ball, doesn’t make bad plays, or turn it over at a high rate.

Big Man of the Day | [player_tooltip player_id="959058" first="Will" last="Shepherd"] | PB Nation ’21

[player_tooltip player_id="959058" first="Will" last="Shepherd"] is the type of player that a coach has a hard time taking out of the game, he has a certain impact on the floor that is really noticeable. As a defender, Shepherd was one of the best out there, he controlled the boards and protected the rim. On the offensive end, Will showed and proved why he’s one of the top stretch forwards in the city, spreading the floor and hitting his jumpers from mid and deep range, he even knocked down a clutch shot to give his team the go-ahead lead with one seconds left. [player_tooltip player_id="959058" first="Will" last="Shepherd"] was one of the top players of the night.
