This tournament was a fantastic showcase of all of the talent present in the midwest, many of which will receive a major uptick in recruiting! Be on the lookout for the rest of my coverage from this event!
Lonny Melvin 2022 6’2 Iowa Mavs Squiers 16U- Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School
Lonny is a large wing who commands the defensive side of the ball. He plays with great basketball IQ, and always seems to be in the right spot on defense, cutting off passing lanes and coming up with blocks. With his growing frame, he should have no problem guarding positions one through four. On offense, he shows good awareness to flash to weak spots in the midrange, especially in the high post. He is great at keeping his head up with the ball and finding the right play for his teammates and himself. He is a good shooter for his size and showed an ability to stretch the floor, and is great when he can get his feet set and shoot off the catch.
Brendan Shanks 2022 6’4 Magic 16U JON- Burnsville High School
Brendan is an intelligent and long wing who uses spacing on the offensive side of the ball very well to find open shots in the midrange. He showed the ability to put the ball on the floor and get to the rim and showed a soft touch on floaters and runners all around the paint. He is fearless and has a real ability to fill up the stat sheet. He is an effective shooter off the bounce and puts constant pressure on the defense in the full court. His long arms allow him to affect the game in a multitude of levels.
Colin Amack 2022 6’1 Wisconsin Focus Travel 16U White- Lake Country Lutheran High School
Colin is a lanky wing with great ball control, he has good explosive moves out of the triple threat, he gets defenders to bite on simple jabs and head fakes out of the triple threat. He shows a natural ability to beat defenders and get to the rim, where he is an incredible finisher. He is great at hanging in the air and contorting around contact.
Jacob Butler Jacob Butler 6'3" | SF Minneapolis North | 2022 State MN 2022 6’3 4:13 Athletics 16U- MPLS North High School
Jacob is an active shooter who moves well without the ball and is deadly accurate when he gets his feet set. He is great at coming off of pin downs and off-ball picks to get his feet underneath him behind the line. Intense on-ball defense does not even seem to bother him, he showed a great ability to knock down shots with a hand in his face. With this ability to shoot I would like to see him put the ball on the floor more and attack the rim and keep improving his shot off the bounce.
Brady Mashla 2022 6’3 Wisconsin Blizzard Donaldson 16U- Hortonville High School
Brady is a long wing that can dominate down low and around the arc. His frame allows him to effectively guard positions one through four. He has great playmaking ability for his size and displayed a great ability to shoot off the bounce. His jump shot has natural fade away to it, he needs to work on bringing his release up and straightening out to effectively shoot at the next level. When he shoots now it allows defenders an easier opportunity to defend his shot. I also suggest that keeping the fundamental basics to the fadeaway would open up his post-game tremendously paired with his ability to dominate down low. Watch out for this kid to make the jump next year and take over games.
