PrimeTime Sports presented us with a highly competitive tournament, the D-Town Showdown consisted of some very talented teams and some of the top rising players in Texas. Here are a few of those players that stood out and caught my eye.

Kamal Brooks - Guard - BBSS Elite Blue - C/o ’24

This young man was on his game this past weekend, he’s an all-around savvy basketball player with good instincts on both sides on the ball. Kamal Brooks shot the ball very well, he showed the ability to create his own shot and get to his spots without forcing anything. He gets into the lane seemingly easy. A good ball-handler, Brooks played his best when he was beating his man off the dribble. This guard found a way to put pressure on defenders and get to the foul line using his speed and strength, which were incomparable to any other guards he faced this weekend. On the defensive end, he’s all over the court, Kamal played tough defense, going for blocks, contesting shots, getting steals, and even diving on the floor and jumping passing lanes. The effort he gave on defense was amazing and game-changing, especially when going for loose balls. The kid will be a special defender, he can pick up his man full court and not get burnt, and he’s also not afraid to get down and dirty and sacrifice his body for the ball. The ceiling is high for Kamal Brooks, he’s going to continue to improve, his style of play is consistent, he just goes out and plays basketball, he doesn’t lose his composure, he doesn’t get out of character, and he gives nothing but sheer effort when he steps on the court.

Tyler Woods - Shooting Guard/Small Forward - Texas Lonestar - C/o ’22

This 6’4 sharpshooter was in attack mode from the jump, any time he got the ball he drove the lane using his length and footwork to get to the rack. Woods got to the hoop at will, he’s a relentless attacker with a knack for getting to his spots and into the paint where he’s an impressive finisher, even through the traffic and contact. Tyler can also step out and shoot the ball with range, he has textbook form and a high release; he had no problem getting his shot off over opponents. This ultra-competitive baller didn’t give up no matter what the score was. Tyler Woods also plays for Byron Nelson High School, one of the top rising teams in the DFW, and if he continues to play like this his name will become more prominent than ever.

[player_tooltip player_id="787324" first="R.J." last="Chatman"] - Point Guard - BBSS Elite Black Elite - C/o ’23

True floor general like no other, every play he made had an impact on the outcome of the game. Chatman changes the game as soon as he feet touch the court, he makes each of his teammates better by constantly setting them up with good or easy shots due to his outstanding court vision and high basketball IQ. He’s a highly unselfish, team-oriented player that did a great job of controlling the offense and communicating with his teammates, R.J. knew where everyone should be at all times. If you’re open he will find you, but he also has that rare ability to throw his man open like a quarterback to a wide receiver. A next-level ball-handler, very under control with the ball, and knows how to use his speed and quickness to get exactly where he wants on the court. Most of all, he showed great leadership, I saw him giving out high fives to everyone, his team seemed to really embrace him. [player_tooltip player_id="787324" first="R.J." last="Chatman"] had a phenomenal weekend, he did it all out there, rebounded, passed efficiently, got buckets, locked down his man, stayed away from making boneheaded plays, and most likely led the whole tournament in assist. This kid is on his way to being the most elite point guard in all of North Texas.

[player_tooltip player_id="959059" first="Jalen" last="Williams"] - Guard - Bobcats 2022 - C/o ’22

6’2 [player_tooltip player_id="959059" first="Jalen" last="Williams"] had an impressive weekend, he showed off his abilities as a complete offensive threat. He loves to attack the basket and excels when doing so. Willams put his dribble penetration instincts on displays and got to the rack over and over again, he continuously broke the press and beat teams with his lateral speed. Good dribbler, even has a shiftiness that gets defenders leaning. His footwork, body control, and quickness allowed him to get to his hot spots, while his ability to stop on dime created the space needed to get his shot off. It doesn’t take this kid long to get it going either, once he gets hot it seems like everything goes in. He shot the ball well from outside and his shooting looked like the difference-maker in their win. Williams also showed his unselfish side by keeping guys involved, finding cutting men, and kicking it out to open shooters. Jalen Willams is different and has is own playing style, he’s a very fundamentally sound prospect that gets it done with the basics and it’s working wonders for him.

[player_tooltip player_id="958601" first="Christian" last="Weddington"] - Shooting Guard/Forward - Triumph 16U Gold - C/o ’22

This 6’4 super athlete has the highest vertical this side of Texas, I actually wouldn’t be surprised if he had one of, if not, the highest vertical leap in the country. [player_tooltip player_id="958601" first="Christian" last="Weddington"] jumps so high that he can literally hit his head on the rim. It’s amazing how quick and easy he gets off the ground, it’s like he’s not even trying. But dunking is not all he does, this lefty has a nice mid-range pull-up jumper that he can hit consistently, and his hangtime allows him to be a crafty finisher around the hoop even when he’s not throwing it down. Impressive size and length at 6’4, very wide wingspan, and a long-standing reach that makes it easier for him to play and guard just about every position on the court. Christian is a marvel to watch because you know he’s going to dunk on someone or make that highlight play sooner than later. He’s put everybody on notice and his stock has been rising since the summer games began. [player_tooltip player_id="958601" first="Christian" last="Weddington"] will be a must-watch player this season at Flower Mound Marcus High School.
