Top 20 Shooting Guards: Dallas/Fort Worth Rankings (Honorable Mentions)

In Dallas, the shooting guard position is as deep as it’s ever been. Since this is a top 20 list, a lot of talented recruits will get left off, but here are some players that I believe will be high on the top 20 list next year. Based on skill, on-court capabilities, in-game performances, and potential going into the 2020-21 season, who are the top shooting guard prospects in the whole Dallas/Fort Worth area?

[player_tooltip player_id="959252" first="Carmelo" last="Adkins"] (2023) | 6-2 | Keller Fossil Ridge:

[player_tooltip player_id="959252" first="Carmelo" last="Adkins"] had an incredible freshman campaign, he averaged 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists per game while shooting the ball extremely well. This 3-point marksman is a knockdown catch-and-shoot player with a natural stroke and a lightning-fast release that got quicker by the game. Good instincts when driving the ball, he’s a very unselfish player with solid court vision and is always willing to make the extra pass; he even does an exceptional job of drawing in attention from the defense and kicking it out to an open man. Carmelo can also be an imposing defender at times with the way he utilizes his length when playing the passing lanes. Adkins already demonstrates a good understanding of the game at such a young age. Any time he makes a mistake he learns from it and improves on it. The ceiling for [player_tooltip player_id="959252" first="Carmelo" last="Adkins"] is incredibly high, if he can continue to grow as a playmaker, continue to strengthen his body, and becomes more aggressive, then he will be one of the most dangerous players in the city.

[player_tooltip player_id="958567" first="Khaden" last="Bennett"] (2022) | 6-3 | South Grand Prairie:

[player_tooltip player_id="958567" first="Khaden" last="Bennett"] is a fantastic student-athlete, not only is he an All-District player, but he’s also an All-Academic guy as well. This gifted shooter is an absolute sniper from deep. Bennett is a dangerous spot-up shooter that doesn’t need a lot of room or time to get his shot off. He’s perfected the art of using screens to get open and to get the right amount of space to take the shot he’s looking for. Good quickness and strong body control when attacking, he can beat his man off the dribble, penetrate the lane, absorb the contact, and still finish the layup like it’s nothing. In transition, he covers ground very well, consistently beating the defense up the court to the basket or to the corner for an open 3-point shot. [player_tooltip player_id="958567" first="Khaden" last="Bennett"] is becoming a notable talent, he has the type of game that’ll work in just about any offense, and he has no fear in clutch situations he’s always ready to take the big shot. Next season, I believe he will be a breakout star and he’ll end the year at the top of this list seeing as though he’ll have more opportunities with multiple seniors leaving.

[player_tooltip player_id="787344" first="R.J." last="Jones"] (2023) | 6-2 | Denton Braswell:

RJ Jones is a very highly skilled and instinctual player for his age. He has a beautiful jumpshot and can knock it down from mid-range or from outside whether there’s a hand in his face or not; his high release makes his shot near unblockable. As a freshman, Jones already displays good footwork when making moves to create for himself and even uses his length well to get to the hoop and finish. RJ is developing into an extraordinary athlete with supreme hops, he can come out of nowhere and get a block or he can get up and throw it down in the open court. At this pace, he’ll be a pure scoring threat in no time. Jones also shows an upside as a defender, he gives a remarkable effort, has good awareness, quick hands, and a wide wingspan. This young man played outstanding and only got better as the year went on. RJ Jones averaged 7 points and 3 rebounds per game and earned himself the Newcomer of the Year award. I don’t know exactly how good he will turn out to be, but I do know that he will definitely be one best player in his entire class.

[player_tooltip player_id="887063" first="Gavin" last="Perryman"] (2021) | 6-1 | Dallas Jesuit:

[player_tooltip player_id="887063" first="Gavin" last="Perryman"] is a versatile all-around guard that led his team in almost every statistical category, assists, steals, and even scoring. Perryman lit up the scoreboard all season, he hit a 3-pointer in every game except one, he scored over 500 points and averaged 16 points per game while shooting over 45% from the field, about 40% from deep, and 88% from the foul line, showing potential to become a true 50/40/90 guy. He’s a top-notch shooter, has good blow-by speed and above-average handles and court vision. Gavin is an excellent team player, not only does he do a great job of scoring within the flow of the offense, but he’s also a willing passer, usually looking to kick it out when driving the lane. His feel for the game is impressive, has good senses on both offense and defense, seems to always be in the right spot at the right time. [player_tooltip player_id="887063" first="Gavin" last="Perryman"] practically does it all the court, his ability to be extremely efficient, and his understanding of the game is going to make him a quality player at the next level.
